A New Insidious Scam

Categories

This past Saturday afternoon, my home telephone rang. When I looked at the caller id, it read that the call was from Mercy Hospital. Mercy is the name of a hospital in Rockville Center, about ten minutes away from where we live. Fearing that something had happened to my mother in law, who lives close by, I gave the telephone to my husband to answer. He listened to what the caller had to say and quickly replied, “Do not call this house again.”

Although the caller id registered as Mercy Hospital, the call was really a solicitation for the installation of solar panels. Our relief that there was nothing wrong with my mother in law quickly turned to anger when we realized that the caller had used a hospital ruse to get us to answer the phone.

I have had sales calls cloned as phone numbers located near my home and office. But I have never had a caller id disguised as a hospital. Have you?

never a hospital but sometimes I answer just to not have message left. What I do not like to do is answer "Who's calling" but I never give my name when I doubt the call is legit.

It's misrepresentation. Not cool. I'd make a stink. Hasn't happened to me...yet.

We rarely answer phone and wait for message which rarely comes...

It has unfortunately become a fact of life that we are accosted on myriad levels by the unscrupulous. I have learned that other than answering hello I say nothing further when I realize the caller is not someone I want to speak with. I simply hang up.

The phone solicitors and robo calls get smarter by the day. It really does turn Poe off though. So not sure how many deals they get when people realize it is not who they thought on the phone.

We usually do. But this time we were concerned about my mother-in-law.
