Food Hacks

Food hacks are all the rage. To me, a food hack is a new or different way to prepare or serve food. Recently, while on the Weight Watchers app, I watched a video of a celebrity chef demonstrate a truly different way to prepare caramelized onions. I had to try it.

Essentially, the recipe involved taking a whole, unpeeled onion and giving it a light coating of olive oil and salt. You then wrap the onion in tin foil and put it in the oven at 350 degrees. The chef said you then let it cook for one hour. When I took my onion out after an hour, it wasn’t cooked enough for me. I had to put it back in the oven for, at least, another half hour.

I’m not sure this food hack was very successful for me but it won’t stop me from trying others. Do you have a favorite food hack you can share?

Happy holidays Gotham!!!

Regarding new ways to prepare food, I had the best method happen yesterday. My youngest daughter came over and took over the prep for our Christmas dinner - Yes, she made the sauce :) Maybe not the same as mine but such a wonderful feeling as a mother to have such giving and talented daughters who are always willing to help me out. I am very blessed and I enjoy hearing them discuss all their new recipes and cooking methods. I'm glad to be their tasting critic. Happy Holidays Everyone!!

Indeed, I need to echo Phyllis' sentiments. Nothing brings me more joy than having my daughters join me in holiday preparations, I learned new ways to cook latkas this year and they were delicious. Happy Healthy and Peaceful New Year.

Rona, I think that sometimes you have to hack the hack. We've been doing onions that way for ages, but our trick is to peel them and cut them in half, first, before wrapping them. BTW, you can do this in the oven or on the grill.

Think of the end product . How you want it to taste . How you want it to look . The presentation and plating . Garnishing . Seasoning . You do the thinking and design . Ditch the hackers . Learn .
