Who's Listening??

Categories
Lifestyle

For years my children have insisted that our computers, cell phones, and Alexa device listen to our conversation. I have always dismissed and laughed off their “conspiracy theories.” This week something happened that made me question whether they were right.

Yesterday, my stepson and I were discussing a certain designer necklace that he was considering buying for his girlfriend. We discussed two specific varieties of the necklace, the long version and short version. I never looked up the necklace on any device, we just talked about the two different versions and which we thought his girlfriend would like better. Later that night, on my Instagram feed, a sponsored ad popped up for that designer featuring the necklace we discussed, both the long and short version.

Coincidence? I’m not sure so anymore.

We usually go to the same place in Sea Cliff for brunch Sundays. One Sunday it popped up on my phone "15 minutes to Sea Cliff"!

Have always been concerned that the Alexa type devices were indeed listening---was going to give in and finally buy one this month---you convinced me to hold off---although my daughter points out that Siri is always listening, just waiting for a question. Very scary indeed.

Big Brother is always listening and watching...Just walking into a store with recognize you and in some cases immediately send you a coupon for that store.

In addition to the devices that listen for command, I would recommend that you tape over the camera on your computers as you are also being watched.

I scrupulously monitor what I allow via the various apps on my devices. The settings for allow notifications and allow apps to monitor your location, often remain turned off or only when app in use. Obviously some exception apply. Anne Kleinman gave out a nice "cover" that blocks the camera on my Mac; probably a useful handout with your name or biz name on it.

My phone was in the room too. A little freaky.

I am definitely not getting one now! Wasn't there a recent case where the court was going to obtain records from and echo type device used in a home where a murder was committed?? That started me wondering about privacy issue too.

I didn't know about that one. Have to find it.
