Consideration

Categories
Lifestyle

I was observing my own actions this week as well as the people around me how considerate, or inconsiderate, we all are. My unscientific study yielded some interesting results.

I've noticed people not holding the door open, push to go first at the supermarket and speeding up so the driver, who has their blinker on, can't move into their lane. It seems to me that people are just not that considerate as much as they used to be. I held the door open yesterday for a person who was behind me and they didn't even say thank you.

Someone close to me just said "It's no longer part of the American way to be considerate of others."

Be kind

Is it the sign of our times or something else? What if we all started holding the door open for the person behind us. How about something little like pushing our chair back in.

Let's use the broken windows policing strategy. Take care of the little things and the big things will start to change.

Random Acts if Kindness-

I agree! Here's one that's happened to me several times. I'm at a restaurant and my lunch companion asks why I look at the waiter and say 'thank you' every time he/she serves me food or tops off my water glass. Their reason for not doing so is 'It's their job.' When did thanking someone for doing a their job, or anything really, become so rare people actually comment on it. I will continue saying 'please' and 'thank you', holding doors open and being considerate. If it's 'no longer part of the American way' let's start a trend! Mitch, Thank You for writing this blog and starting the conversation.

I enjoy delivering small acts of kindness. As I age some offer to me and it gets interesting when I decline and say please no go you....
I refuse to refrain from calling out bands acts. Folks dislike getting called out so the threat of it often deters it in the future.

I actually noticed this week more courtesies — drivers waiving me on, etc. Perhaps it was wishful thinking, perhaps this week I decided unconsciously to ignore lack of civility and focus on acts of normal kindness.
Although I have never been a person who just walked around smiling, I have been going out of my way to look at people while waiting on lines etc. and smile. It’s contagious.

Couldn't agree more with your post. I will do more with consideration.

The results of my own unscientific study throughout NYC leads to the conclusion that the vast majority of people are quite considerate, hold doors open, and most say "thank you." In my experience, it's often not as prevalent in other cities, but is prevalent in most suburban and rural areas. While a few bad acts always outweigh a myriad of good acts, my own experience leaves me with an inner confidence in the goodness of most people. Call me a romantic.

I always try to hold a door open, sometimes at the expense of waiting a bit extra for them to get to the door. I also hate inconsoderste drivers. I drive a lot in my job and when traveling to Florida and PA several times a year. When I am signaling, far too many people do speed up, preventing you from changing lanes. It's less of an issue down south. I also notice far too many that speed up to cut across lanes without signaling at al. Illegal and quite dangerous but all too common on our NY roads.

I try to be as inconsiderate as possible . I enjoy cutting in line . I enjoy tailgating . If I see an older couple or a disabled individual going into the bank I sprint to the door and get in line before they do . I try and use my car horn as often as possible . I don’t cleanup after my dogs poop . My favorite thing to do besides cutting in line is to turn up the volume on the TV after everybody goes to bed . Other than that I never clear the table or help with dinner . Belching as loud as I can during dinner is another favorite .Oh yeah ..... I love to interrupt .

We were in Iceland last week and you really notice the difference when you're in a foreign country. People smile at one another, they hold the door etc. It does seem to be something we lost along the way.
