One of Gotham’s many theme base list serves is Sportstalk (inspired by Ben Geizhals before a long ago Giants Super Bowl).  The concept is for sports fans to discuss sports without clogging up Fredslist.  You need not be a Gotham member and just need to ask us to put you on the list and then email to sportstalk@gothamnetworking.com to join the conversation.

Sports are one of my great interests, both participating (the Batmen softball team won its second consecutive Championship recently) and rooting.

However, inasmuch as I am a diehard Yankee and Football Giants fan, I’m dying right now and it’s hard.

The Yanks lost to the Boston Red Sox (I left the 16-1 debacle in the 4th inning, the earliest in my long fandom) in the recent Playoffs and the Bosox are in the World Series (first time against the Dodgers in 102 years. See above picture.)

The Giants are worse.  After Monday night’s loss they are 1-6 with no chance to salvage their season or 37 year old Eli Manning’s Giant pro football career.

The World Series opened Tuesday night and the only thing left is to decide between the Bosox and Dodgers.

As Dodger fans once cried: Wait till next year!

The Yankees enjoyed a year any Mets fan would be proud of (and with our starting pitching probably gone all the way. So your Jints failed as did my tram’s Pen. You still have some nice pieces.
Thankfully Se still get to enjoy the music.

Unlike most people I have never really followed sports (sorry), however my husband was very into football--not for the reason most people watch I believe, but because of the connection he had (way before social media was a "thing") to his colleagues across this country, as well as several others. I have heard the phrase "football widow" however for me it was the opposite. Football season was the time of year I could tell like clockwork when Paul would be in the Den watching football---rather than traveling or at meetings. His interactions with the television while on the phone with his friends was priceless and left wonderful memories for my daughters and I.

With the exception of the Yankees, most NY sports teams including the Rangers, Knicks, Jets and now the mighty Giants are all in rebuild mode. Waiting two years is the norm. But we are NY'ers and that is tough idea to swallow.

I can’t get my head around that...

Derf. You and I were literally weened on the success of the Yankees and The Football Giants . Charlie Conerly , YA Tittle , Frank Gifford, Kyle Rote , Alex Webster , Del Shofner, Sam Huff and Andy Robustelli . To name a few . On the diamond we cheered for The Mick, Yogi , The Scooter , Whitey Ford and Allie Reynolds . To name a few . Our sports world didn't go west of the Hudson let alone the Harlem River . We had a lock on winning . A few bumps . The 1958 Giants / Colts was hard to live through . The Yanks and Dodgers met 11 times in the World Series. We sat glued to our little black and white TV's . Transistor radios to our ears . So yeah Derf. We got spoiled on success early and never accepted defeat easily . And it possibly entered our adult psyche . Thriving on competition and winning . Success . Not settling for second best . Life for us transcended sports but the mantra stayed the same . WIN . COMPETE . THRIVE !

I was at the Stadium in ‘58 and Gifford got the first down and we got a bad spot!
