Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner

Categories
Lifestyle

Having reached a venerable age, yet aspiring to be Forever Young, one notices many not so subtle changes.

One of the most obvious is having someone get up and offer a subway seat.  Another is receiving courteous “Sir” greetings.

Some would say “It’s all good” and that I earned it.

Nonetheless, there is an invidious flip side.  Too often, almost every time we are being seated in a restaurant, we are traveled to a far corner.   In actuality I don’t mind the out of the traffic and noisy tumult positioning.  That is until I gaze upon the aged countenances at the neighboring tables. Then I get it.  They want to project a youthful happening atmosphere to their target demographic clientele and although our credit cards work we don’t fit their optimal visual profile.

The next time you are seated please keep this in mind.  We could start a movement or class action.

I don’t want to be a baby, but don’t put me in the corner!

Wednesday night I was seated by the window with my group at a restaurant on Ninth. My first thoughts were, "Nice but are we going to be caught in any crossfire or in the way of a rogue vehicle!" Sad but true thoughts in these crazy times. Dinner was wonderful though and my out of town guests enjoyed the busy city view.

Interesting, I'll have to pay more attention to where I'm seated at restaurants in the future.

Wow - I never even considered that. But ..... in true Jackie Mason style - I NEVER take the first table offered.

My mother used to do that

An advantage of aging is knowing the definition of "invidious" without looking it up on a "device".

I still think you should focus on the positive aspects: you are here and able to enjoy dinner with family and friends. Never mind the restaurant's motives - they're just a business trying to be successful.

The use of the word Ma'am!!! It drives me crazy. I'm too young-mentally-to be called Ma'am.

I’m picky about tables. Paul always stands back and let’s me survey the room before I make my choice. Lol

The benefit of not getting to read a blog until later in the day is that you also get to read other people's thoughts and comments in response. I also never actually took note of where I was seated, but will do so out of curiosity. I am not bothered by how someone addresses me, the not so subtle changes that are sometimes like a "gut punch" are more physical ones. I think most of us see ourselves as that person who exists in our mind's eye---and in that space I remain ageless.

Interesting observation, Fred. I will be paying attention and I won't be shy about it either.

Traveled to a far corner ? Who's zoomin' who Derf . Take control . Walk in like you own the place . Body language exudes confidence and prestige . Show em your 18 inch biceps . Or I will . That being said Diane walks in first , shows her badge and sits where she wants to . I follow shortly and ask the Maitre De " have you seen my wife ?" Why yes SIR he says ..... She's right over there at our most prestigious table . The one reserved for our VIP guests . Why she's already ordering the wine Sir . I sidle over . Hang up my Stetson and my rig and order three fingers of Pikesville Rye neat . Diane has already placed our orders . I'm having the Cowboy Ribeye . Rare . The sheriff is having a dozen Bluepoints and a bottle of Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Brut to share . We are both dressed in black and we are tan . So Derf if you don't want to get traveled to a far corner . THIS is how you enter a restaurant .

As I have said many times before you are a gifted creative writer and must write a book!
