It's A Holiday

I am now renting office space in a suite with two other law firms. The conversation on Friday turned to whether we were taking today, Columbus Day, off. I was sort of surprised to see that one of the firms would be open with full staff today. My office, as well as the other law firm in the suite is closed today.

 

Then the conversation turned to what other holidays do you give your staff. Apparently, I am very generous in that I am closed on all of the “Monday holidays” and I also give my staff the day after Thanksgiving off. We are open on Election Day-even though the courts are closed-as well as Veteran’s Day.

 

I always thought that my holiday schedule was aligned with most other offices, but I may be wrong. Are you open today? On what holidays do you typically close?

Coming from a career in the public sector, I am used to taking days like this. The other side of that coin involves whether the courts are open. I learn over the weekend that my daughter's firm opens today and presidents' day. Discussing it with Shelly, my view involves whether you have an opportunity to bill hours.

My industry is mixed on this day. In the past we were never off. As of late many of the design showrooms are closed. I rarely take off and today I teach a class - most colleges don’t close for this holiday.

we are open today. It's a good day top catch up at the office with fewer distractions.

I am open today & have been for years because about 1/2 my clients are open....so if they need us we are here. I have a generosus Holiday Policy that also pays for the Day after Thanksgiving. I also add a "Floating Holiday" where the following policy applies: *Floating Holiday is to be used for Religious observation (i.e.-Good Friday, Yom Kippur) or another non-paid Holiday (i.e. MLK, Columbus Day) or for your Birthday. It can NOT be used to ‘extend’ a vacation or carried over year to year.

We are open. Our clients do not recognize holodays, so the only ones we take off are the Federal Holidays and like Rona, add the Thanksgiving Friday.

We were closed today but that wasn't always the case. It's one of those days that could go either way. We are open on Veterans Day though.
