Nicknames

In the whirlwind of the confirmation, the subject of nicknames appears in the periphery. Specifically, the memory of nicknames from our youth.
So, I’ll share my story. An attempt to obliterate my nickname of long ago.
They called me Benjie.
When I went off to college, I was determined to leave my nickname behind forever. I would answer to Ben and nothing else.
My plan worked, or so it seemed. Through college and law school the old nickname remained in its dark place.
It was on my first day of work after law school. New firm. Exciting beginning. And the lawyer in the office next to mine was an old friend from high school who greeted me with a great big “Benjie!”
I’m not sure he ever called me Benjie again. We’re still friends and he calls me Ben.
Every once in a while, I’ll run into someone who knew me when and  I’ll hear the name from long ago.

The memories this blog brought back made me laugh. I had many nicknames growing up given to me by different relatives. The hardest one to get rid of was Betty. I never liked the name and after high school I decided to use Liz. The change took a while and was successful until I got on FaceBook and received a message with the question “Are you Betty?” It took a while to convert high school friends to using Liz.

My response to anyone who’s called me ‘Lizzie’ is “Remember, she was acquitted.” That usually takes care of that one.

When we ran someone called you Cricket and you didn’t like that either...
Cayce Crown

First, please don't call it confirmation, call it attempted confirmation.

Second, I've always loved Cayce, even though I'm legally Catherine. If I had been called Cathy, I doubt I'd be writing this comment right now.

Only my late step dad called my a nickname very late in life. I never took to it and made it clear!. Some of the folks I played softball with who mostly attended school with my younger brother used a different surname for me based on a character in a TV show. It was only that group and not lasting; they later used the last three letters of my last name and I liked it enough to get then NYC Parks commissioner Henry Stern to give me a name tag based on it. Two friends from high school used an actor's first name because I allegedly exhibited the no nonsense attitude of characters he played in mid 70s to early 80s. At work m and school my wife often is called by her birth name. I was intro'd to her as Shelly so most I know in our families and friends use that.

Great post, Ben! My Dad called me Dana Banana, and sometimes just Banana. I loved it!

My brother was always Freddie to me, still is mostly. However after reading this column I will call him to ask if it somehow bothers him---I do know the rest of the world refers to him as "Fred". My nickname as a very young girl was given to me by my closest friend--it was not a very flattering name yet for whatever reason it didn't bother me. After a separation of a number of years (my family moved) we met up again in college---she immediately referred to me by that name. Just once
