He Never Disappoints

Bill and I saw Billy Joel perform – again – at Madison Square Garden.

It is one of only a few concerts I can think of where you enter the venue singing, sing the whole time and leave thinking about the few songs you didn’t hear. His repertoire is so vast that he could fill many concerns and never repeat a song.

And, Billy Joel is so relaxed on the stage behind his piano having a conversation with his fans. As if he was born to that spot.

But . . . here is the thing. My favorite part of the show was not a song performed by the headline performer. Instead, Mike Delguidice performed the most moving rendition of Nessun Dorma. It literally stopped the house. When Delguidice is not performing with Billy Joel, he is singing with Big Shot, his own Joel cover band. We’ve seen them perform. It’s really fun and I highly recommend a visit.

That said, my Billy Joel did not disappoint and I would see him again. Of course, I’m partial because he sang my favorite song, Vienna, and I’m pretty convinced he was singing it straight to me.

I like the concept of residencies since many more are likely to get to a show. At the same time I prefer much smaller venues these days.
A lot of artists with large catalogues actually devote shows to one album plus other gems.
I first saw John Fogerty do this and thus attended three different successive shows (Green River, Bayou County, Cosmo's Factory) at the Beacon one year.
Steely Dan did it last year and this year.
The Doobie Brothers as well this year.
Brian Wilson did it with Pet Sounds and with the original version of Smile!
Peter Frampton did it with a reprise of Frampton Comes Alive's 40th year. Dave Mason did an "Alone Together" Again tour.
Badfinger's Joey Molland did it at My Father's Place last month with the Straight Up LP.
Fred and I and a few others in the tribe will see Poco founder Richie Furay perform Poco's DeLIVErin' later this month at the same venue.

My cousin would love your blog today---any special event she goes to see "Billy".

I work with Ken Cino (solutions specialist my day, musician by night) who is Big Shot's back up guitar player (especially when they play any bars, story for another time). He thinks Mike D does a better job singing now than Billy himself, but that is also up for interpretation. Good music either way,.

There’s a Billy Joel channel running on channel 30, Sirius radio. It makes my commute so much happier.

Reminds me that when I last saw the Boss, he played The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle in its entirety.
