My New Pen

With everything that was going on in the news last week, I thought I'd use my blog to relay an act of kindness that I experienced.

I was on the train going into New York City last week when I first noticed it, I didn’t have a pen. I can blame the new handbag that I was carrying but that’s a blog for another day. I politely asked the person sitting next to me whether she had a pen that I could borrow. After searching her handbag-which was twice the size of mine-she realized that she didn’t have a pen either.

When I switched trains at Jamaica, I purposely sat in a four seater, hopeful to find a person willing to part with a pen. All three people sitting with me cordially looked for pens but no one acknowledged that they had an extra pen (one young man purposely tried to hide one from me).

I did not have the time to stop at a store to buy a pen after I exited the subway, I had to go straight to the courtroom. Luckily, the first man I sat down next to kindly offered me a very nice pen. And he insisted that I keep the pen.

I have that pen in my bag and will think of the kindness of that man every time I use it. Do you have any similar mementos?

Your blog this morning will give me the opportunity to focus on the acts of kindness I’ve witnessed rather than some of the issues surrounding us. Thank you so much Rona. And it never ceases to amaze me that the giant bags I carry either seem to have more than a dozen pens in the bottom or not one.
When “pen less” I have never been refused one from those I asked.

Interesting in that most of my bags and suitcases include multiple pens, including some I'd be happy to share. I sometimes will depart with a small case even when not needed per se so I have all the things, glasses, iPhone, sometimes iPad, pen(s) all in one place.
That said unless a restriction applies I tend to take notes on my 'phone or 'pad at meeting, etc. these days

The universe wanted you to have that particular pen from that particular person!

Funny thing about pens, I am very superstitious. When I get a pen (currently I am using promo piece from Minuteman Press, thanks to Fred Morante) and my I am doing well with my sales, I become very connected to said pen and will be reluctant to even lend it for the fear it might break the good luck streak. But I do carry a second pen or two in my case and car, so I would have been happy to give one of those out.
