David Wright, New York Mets

So much experienced last week. Some truly tragic involving loss.  Revelations about hurt inflicted on others. Developments (ongoing) on the government side (not just in D.C.). A very successful function supporting a great program including its two centers serving seniors (where I serve as board chair). A great concert and an anniversay both of which I had blogged about in advance.

This morning I reserve for Number Five (5). A great Met; probably their greatest position player to date. The guy hit, performed in the clutch, stole bases, fielded and led.

The Mets gave the Captain a well-deserved day at Citifield yesterday.

He played and batted third. He was next to the player who played SS next to him longer than any other Mets player combo.

Jose & David

I suspect a few more to come including retirement of the “5” that graced his uniform.

Number Five

Marisa “owns” a signed bat and wears his jersey when she attends Mets games here or at Dodger Stadium. And growing up she wore 31 (early on she became the number one catcher on her team).

David Wright spoke briefly, graciously and with love to the fans after the game.

Here’s hoping he plays a role with the Mets, perhaps in a meaningful way in the front office or on the field. The saga should continue.

David takes the field

Thank you to Our Captain.

And of course someone smart and thoughtful with the Mets knew to play this Free classic as #5 left approached the dugout following his address.

With all that’s going on saying something positive about someone is a good thing

You reminded me to add the song (well different version, same artist) played after David spoke.

I'm not a baseball fan but watching it all even brought tears to my eyes.

Is Catcher a “position” ? If so, I’d say Gary Carter and Mike Piazza were even greater assets for the Mets. David Wright was great and yet his injuries prevented him from being the Met’s greatest of all time.

I certainly weighed both and Marisa article mentioned Marisa's Little League #.

This is made on behalf of Bob O (Robert Olivari):
"I would have gladly had him at third instead of Arod...he's a person of character, a true Captain in every way possible."
Fred Klein

They should have given him another at bat...

It was discussed post game. Evidently health played a role in not pushing for more. They were a very quiet 18-10 last month. And that record disappointed me as they gave away games in my view including Thor's prior start (when he left Mets up 3-0).

Unlike Carter or Piazza, two great Met players for sure, Wright was home grown and never adorned another uniform. That makes him unique as a Met " all time great" player. It was an emotional night and well deserved. I too would have liked to see another at bat. But He knew going in, it was two up and then visits to the TV and radio booths. You could also see the constant stretching he was doing both on and off the field. He must stiffen up very quickly and that would be too painful.
