Mars and Venus Go to the Prom

Nancy’s recent blog about her daughter attending the prom inspired me to write this blog. Next Monday both my daughter and step-son will be attending their prom. Their preparations for the event could not be more different.

My daughter’s preparation began in early January. At that time, a Facebook page was posted wherein every girl attending the Oceanside prom would post a picture of the dress they had purchased so that no dress was duplicated. Sydney started putting pressure on me to take her to purchase a dress as soon as the page was created. My response to her daily inquiries was always the same, as soon as she knew she was going, i.e. she had a date, I would take her dress shopping. Once the date was secured, we went dress shopping. Shopping for the dress was actually a fun experience-although we had to be mindful of the dresses already posted-but we did order it from a store forty minutes away from my home. That meant many early Saturday morning trips to the store for fittings. Of course, the moment we ordered the dress, it’s picture happily joined the many others on the Facebook page.

Following the purchase of the dress, much more shopping had to be done. We had to buy shoes, proper undergarments, a handbag, and decide on what jewelry she will wear. After that, appointments had to be made for a manicure, pedicure, her hair, and make-up. And, of course, a swatch of the dress had to be given to her date so his shirt can match her dress.  Hope for nice weather this week because she and her friends will all be outside tanning to achieve that proper sun kissed look for the prom.

With my step-son, Ryan it was a much different experience. About three weeks ago, he asked my husband to take him for his tuxedo. Sydney obtained the material swatch for him from his date’s dress for his shirt. Ryan rented a tuxedo at a friend’s store in Oceanside. He’s going to wear the black shoes that he already has. On the day of the prom, he’ll take a shower, put on his tuxedo and shoes, and be ready to go.

Who knew it could be that easy?

I just this morning took a new picture of my five month old granddaughter and put it in a frame over the current picture. Underneath that one, in the frame, were a few old ones, including a picture of my daughter at her high school prom,14 years ago. It sure goes by fast.

the most difficult part of my son's prom preparations were for the after-party, since I was apparently the only Mom trusted to assist in those plans - Riva, apparently signed in as Alan

Looking forward to the easy one in a few years!! But I have to say, the girl version of prom is actually fun and for us, this year was only a dress rehearsel since Jaclyn is only a junior -- so we get to do it all again next year for real!!

I am so excited for my son's prom (This wed. eve)---Tonight is a parents meeting (as they are renting a house in Point Pleasant after prom--for two days, Thankfully someone else is handaling the details. I was very happy to go Tuxedo shopping and loved the first thing he put on.
My son will be interning @ the Mayors office this summer (Bloomberg)---he has already been properly vetted, still I remind him that prom and after prom is not the time to blow it....He's a really good kid, I am blessed!

Cindy, have him talk to Alan. :) Congrats on the internship.

The best thing Oceanside does is an event called Dawn Delirium. It's a post prom party at Warehouse 5 in Island Park, sponsored by PTA. All seniors get two free tickets and two free raffle tickets (parents can buy extra). Everyone is checked at the door to make sure they are sober (if not sober, the parents have to pick them up), they are not allowed to bring in bags, the student has to be in the door by 2:00 a.m., and if they leave, they can't come back. All night long, prizes are raffled off for the kids and at 4:45 a.m. a Nissan Senza is raffled off. In order to win the child must be present. Everyone goes to Dawn Delirium and no one goes to the City, Hamptons, Jersey shore etc. Of course, I had to buy Sydney a different outfit for Dawn delirium. To me, it was money very well spent.

My daughter just turned 12. The thought of her approaching an age where she will start dating is more than I can handle right now, let alone only being a few years away from a prom!

As crazy as it is to get all the preparations done for a girl - I have two - I mostly enjoyed it. Especially when you found that perfect dress - sweet. It was making the bus arrangements (I did that) that was a huge headache. Not to mention the day of Wendy's prom was about 900 degrees - it was brutally hot which meant the girls struggled to have their hair and makeup not melt!! I think someone else mentioned it's just preparation for wedding time lol

Alan & Riva...have you ever thought of talking to HS seniors? This year was the first time our HS had a senior prom assembly---for children and parents...the dangers of texting while driving, driving while intoxicated etc...besides the heart breaking stories, I did not get the sense that it hit home...real talk about REAL things that can/do happen, in LI---in my opinion are far better than any video---and when AJS talk on their level---watch out...

Of all the uses of social media...this seems like one of the more intelligent. Good luck to everyone during Prom season.

Up here in the wilds of Westchester, the boys tend to match their dates dresses only with ties and cummerbunds (if they don't go with vests). Even with shirts, it's a far cry better than our day. We matched head to toe with our dates. You can imagine the flashback I had when, while with Jonah getting him fitted for a gorgeous tux with which he even got to wear a black tie because his date had a floral dress, a guy came in with his girlfriend and her mint green dress. While he picked out a mint green bow tie, all I saw was the mint green tuxedo I wore to my HS girlfriend's prom.

Two down, one to go. My older daughter was some boy's date for his senior prom (she was a junior), and she went with then-boyfriend Grayson to his prom (Rye Country Day School) and he accompanied her to her prom. My son was his (senior) girlfriend's prom (it was an all-girls school) when he was a sophomore and broke up with his girlfriend just before his senior prom, so he took a friend, Alison. I had zero input into my daughter's clothing, but I did take my son to be fitted for his tux. Memories...

Mom, you forgot about the part where we ordered a bag online, cancelled it, ordered another one, cancelled that one and bought a bag at the store. Wasn't that fun? Sydney

Regarding the question, would I ever put something on youtube that would embarrass someone, absolutely never. There are times when we all inadvertently hurt someone, but why would one ever do something that has a great possibility of doing that? My hope is that we're here to spread kindness & caring in all we do to the extent that we can.
