I was wrong.  OK not completely wrong, but when Don last wrote about the Russian Punk protest band "Pussy Riot,"  I thought that they were just a bunch of screwed up kids looking to cause trouble.  After watching a special documentary about them on HBO, I was wrong.

I was right about the fact that nobody has a right to screw with other people's religion.  However, sometimes you need to do a little bit of wrong to engage in a whole lot of right.  I won't regurgitate the entire story, but I will leave you with some insight.  The Russian government locked up several young women for singing rude songs about Putin in a church protest.  The were held in prison without bail for 7 months awaiting trial, and then were convicted of hooliganism and sentenced to two years in prison.  If the Russian government is doing their god's work...it is not any god that I know.

I thought that they were stupid little punk girls looking to get attention and get famous.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  While they may be a little screwed up, they are unquestionably bright, philosophical and righteous.  They probably could have apologized, begged for mercy and gotten much less.  They spoke of freedom, oppression and tyranny.  The live in a country that makes ours look like a utopia and they are willing to make incredible sacrifices to change it.

If you're the type that misses the 60's, you should definitely watch this special.

I think this story is a great example of what an all powerful central government can do to people that protest too loudly. As Americans we feel safe that we'll always have the bill of rights to protect us. However, the current headlines show an all out assault on the 1st, 2nd and 4th amendments (that is just in the past few months!). I don't mean to make a right or left political argument with that statement. The past 13 years of both right leaning and left leaning administrations should give all Americans from all parts of the political spectrum reason to fear the freedoms we take for granted are not guaranteed if we don't do everything we can to protect them.

I guess you were looking for something to watch on HBO other than Girls?

Interesting that it serves both as an example of how much better we are than them, and as a warning of what can happen (as you described).

So you're saying the reset button didn't work? Does this mean our bad relationship with them isn't Bush's fault ;)

News articles on Pussy Riot would have educated you well ahead of the HBO doc. Sometimes names (titles) do not accurately describe content.

As we have seen consistently, news articles today more than ever come with at least a bias if not an agenda. We see opinions infused, subjective observations presented as fact and statistics misused. It is a sad commentary, but you really must see something to believe it. Video can be edited, but the bottom line is if you see them speak and hear what they say, you will definitely get a better understanding of their sacrifice.
