A Series of Lasts

Before a series of firsts.

Today was my son’s last day of high school class. He has one test before graduation next week, but for all intents and purposes his high school years have ended.

Two weeks ago we had his last Spring Concert, the last time he will arrange and perform with his acapella group. Then of course, there was prom this past Friday night.

See what I mean? It’s a series of lasts. Don’t get me wrong. Each “last” has been a celebration of accomplishment and growth. I remember like it was yesterday what he was like entering high school four years ago and am constantly amazed at how much four years have meant.

With this series of lasts, however, comes a distinct series of firsts. In a few weeks we will head out to college orientation where he gets to start all over again. He has chosen engineering as his path, either chemical or nuclear for that matter, so hard work is in his future but he is excited to get started.

Stay with me Gotham. This summer brings with it a lot of change for me. And I haven’t even started talking about my college graduate and her upcoming travels! I am going to need all of your help to get through this series of lasts and firsts!

It reminds me of a song poco performs (and its founder Richie Furay will perform tomorrow night in South Orange) that inludes the lyrics “a new beginnin’ clingin’ in my head the rest of its been said. “

It’s all part of the journey. There’s a middle, too! I say...embrace the mystery of your next and be grateful for every “last” and what it taught you.
