The Test

Like my fellow Gothamite Al D’Elia (and I’m sure there are others) I went to Brooklyn Technical High School, one of the specialized high schools in New York City.
Now there’s talk of eliminating the test for entry to these schools. Bills are being introduced in Albany - I’ve gotten several emails from the Alumni Association to “Save the Test”.
From what I’ve read, the proposal is to base entry on a number of factors, including grades, and scores in state-wide tests. There is talk of reserving a certain percentage of places for students coming from disadvantaged schools and backgrounds. Increase diversity and opportunity.
But a seat taken by one is a seat lost by another. And I wonder whether Al and I would have gone to Tech....

People always trying to find the fairest way is positive. Whether they are successful is always open to interpretation.

Very difficult call. In my work with many students that experience processing issues and test anxiety, High Stakes Testing is problematic and leaves many bright students out in the cold.
The reality of the financial ability to pay for Test Prep for the wealthy and the "Tiger Mom" mentality of studying "24" hours a day in the Asian Community cannot be overlooked.

Wouldn't be wonderful if all neighborhood High Schools were of high quality and students could get a great education without having to travel hours!

Improve/ Increase the school of students from certain nabes and they'll compete for sure.
