Just Do It!

Categories

"Just do it" is the iconic Nike slogan and to me it is a very compelling and profound mantra.

Every day I say it to myself (out loud) before I start my morning exercise regimen.

It would be so easy to take a day off, but not if you tell yourself to "just do it".

Nike was really onto something!

Do you know the derivation of the slogan?

Thank you for reminding me of that iconic saying. I’ve been trying to do an exercise routine, or at least exercise, for many years. Perhaps that will help.

“Just Do It.” The famous Nike slogan came from a rather unlikely source - spree killer Gary Gilmore, who received the death penalty for murdering two people in Utah in July, 1976. Just before a firing squad did their duty, Gilmore was asked if he had any last words. “Let’s do it,” he simply said. When Dan Wieden of Wieden+Kennedy was tapped to create a tagline for Nike a decade later, something about Gilmore’s words just seemed to fit. “Let’s” was changed to “Just” to add a dash of emphasis. Wow. Tom's explanation is wild. I'm not sure how I feel about it after hearing that.

Whoa ! Good
Lord ! Derf . I get the message but the morbidity of the origin takes me down a dark road . Not the intention of the blog or slogan . It led me to a You-Tube video of Gary Gilmore's firing squad execution . What could Phil Knight have been thinking when he bought into Dan Wieden's pitch ? That being said I have my own mantra to get me to where I have to be . Ductus Exemplo . .Taken from the Latin " lead by example ." Or Admiral William McCraven 's " Make Your Bed . " So it was those zero dark thirty wake ups throughout a 50 year career of having to be ready right now . Without being said " Just Do It " took no thought . It was built in to my system . Don't think about it. " Just do it ." You know . That moment between the alarm and throwing the covers off . A crucial moment that can sink you right where you lay . Don't think . Just Do It . The rest will come .
