Being The Middle Child

Categories

I read an article this morning which said that Princess Kate and Prince William are celebrating their first anniversary as a family of five. In reading that article my first thought went to the fact that, after the birth of Prince Louis this week they now have an older child, middle child and youngest child.

I grew up in a family of five. I was the middle child with an older brother and younger sister. Happily, the three of us are still relatively close and I consider my sister one of my closest confidents.

In writing this blog, I looked at several articles about being the middle child. Interestingly, most of them talked about how the middle child becomes a master of compromise. Specifically, in an article in the Huffington Post concerning middle children the author wrote, “If you want to move mountains, gain momentum, add some joy to your family, project, startup or life, find a middle child. They’re eternal optimists. And they know that being bossy and demeaning others won’t get them very far.”

My brother and sister would absolutely agree that this statement describes me. Where were you in birth order? Do you think your birth order affected your personality?

Let me share this- I work with a set of triplets who are just now graduating H.S., and believe me, there is a birth order amongst them that is very clear and distinct. Although each was born just moments apart, the first born is the clear leader of the pack and gets the attention, is very competitive; the middle one is the socialite and neutralist, not too competitive; and the youngest one is always contending for a bit of attention but feels the other two dominate it, she is just trying to find her spot and try to cling to a skill unique from the other two. It's very interesting!

I was youngest of five, spoiled rotten and always got my way! That’s why I married Victoria. She knows me!

I read a book about birth order number and it described me to a "T" as a first born!

Youngest of three brothers. Definite personality differences. I do think my middle brother is the most level headed and most neutral.

Youngest of 4 and the others are still hanging in Georgia.
