My Favorite Groups

Social media groups that is  -- an amazing resource if you are prepared to embrace it.

Facebook groups offer communities bonded around commonalities. There are Moms Groups, vacation groups, and food groups. Group members who are perfect strangers become friends in the presence of the rest of the community. It’s quite the phenomenon.

Amongst my favorites are the Tri-State Restaurant Club (where I get most of my restaurant recommendations and where David Abeshouse is a star contributor) and Curly Girls! (where I have learned more about product and process than I can begin to explain). I am also a fan of Gluten Free on Long Island and more.

LinkedIn offers a different breed of groups, more substantive and informative perhaps, but no less a sense of community.

Are you a member of any social media groups?

Surprisingly, a garden group. Also Roslyn High School.

Nance, TSRC is a guilty pleasure (and also a frustration at times, because of how thoughtlessly and poorly some folks play in the social media sandbox).

Facebook groups are great for building a sense of community, being a participant in several neighborhood beautification groups, Buy Nothing groups and a fascinating one, Vintage Philadelphia, where people post vintage photographs of buildings no longer here anymore and photos of Philadelphia in the late 1800's and middle 1900's.

It's fascinating to see how familiar and well-traveled streets looked before the dawn of the automobile.

Plus people share general happy blasts from the past with posts about old Philadelphia food favorites such as Frank's Root Beer, Tastykake, Horn & Hardart, Bassett's Ice Cream and Dolly Madison Ice Cream, just to name a few.

Nothing like a few blasts from the past to make you smile and reminisce!

Who Knew? Actually I guess a lot of you did. I have been afraid to stick my toe in the facebook waters (although I do get odd popups on my email from a few people's facebook postings, including Dave Abeshouse for which I remain grateful). Nancy, you have made me a little more willing to take the plunge.

Love a few great FB groups: Women Videographers, Club Level Mastermind, Gotham Film Festival. Wonderful way to connect to like minded people or peers who can support you from around the world.

In a number of groups but not active. Prefer in-person to the virtual. Probably check in some musical ones more often.
