Court House Deli Bench

Categories
Lifestyle

When I vacation in Key West I have a regular Friday night routine of sitting on a bench across the street from the weekly "Sound Check" at Key West's iconic rock n' roll Green Parrot venue.

The Boys

I've come to consider the bench, fronting the Court House Deli, to be the epicenter of Key West culture and humanity. There, no one has a label or preconceived status.  It is a melting spot populated by a potpourri of artists, street people, lawyers, retirees, drinkers and writers.  Needless to say, one has an opportunity to mix with an interesting variety of people on the Bench.

Another tradition is to post a Bench photo (last week pictured above) on the Court House Deli Bench Facebook page (yes it has a page) which allows for virtual participation and commentary.

It's like "Cheers" of vintage TV fame.

Which one are you? Artist, lawyer, writer or drinker?

You should visit it after painting. :)

I actually was wondering when this blog would appear. Having seen the pictures on Facebook, I thought it would make excellent blog fodder.

I call this phenomena "Psyche - Free zones." When I first moved to California in 1971 I settled in Palo Alto right off the Stanford campus . The whole town was a Psyche Free zone . It was a new concept for me coming from the Likes of an all men's college and an all men's Navy . Hamburger joints in the eucalyptus groves with empty long necks all over the tables . My softball team had a neuro surgeon on the mound. A female neuro surgeon . Behind the plate we had the Fry Cook at a local hangout called " The Dutch Goose ." A couple of Stanford professors , a dentist , a mail woman and an ER nurse . Burgers and Buds at the Goose to follow each game . Egos checked at the door . Psyche Free Zone . And so I live my life that way today . Please don't ask me what I do . Ask me about The Yankees or ask me for a recipe or a good book recommendation . But don't ask me late for dinner !
