Love this! Relationships make the world go ‘round.
I haven’t worked on a daily basis in mid-town Manhattan for about 7 years.
But when I am in that neighborhood (52nd and Park), I still know many of the doormen and garage attendants and building managers I knew from working, walking and parking there daily. They say “hi Victoria!” And I ask them about their children and now, grandchildren. They ask "how are my babies" because I used to bring Allie to work with me when she was four years old. She is graduating from college this year. LOL These exchanges make me smile for the rest of the day. My kids ask if I know everyone in New York, because when I walk on certain streets there so many familiar faces. I say no, only those I took the time to get to know.

Uggghh Fred. You are killing my dream of going to live alone (with Vic) as a hermit in the woods!

Great post!!! I always believed that making friends is the best business in the world. And pastime. I never feel more alive than when I am genuinely engaged with and helping another. In that respect, Gotham has empowered me to be helpful to others and touch hearts in ways that wouldn't have been possible without the opportunity it is for sharing, helping, validating, making a difference and having fun. Off course, the Gotham spirit embraces all our encounters whether the dog watcher, the dry cleaner, the policemen or your dentist. It's who you are before you joined. Just think...in every encounter, you have the opportunity to open a door and/or make someone feel ten feet tall. So...whether it was helping an unemployed friend pay her rent (thank you Corey Barak); introduce an investment bank to a revolutionary energy company (former member and client); or see non profits such as Sharp Again Naturally or Savvy Ladies Benefit from a $5000 grants from the Gotham Summer of Giving Campaign...(the list goes on)...these are vitamins for the soul. My gratitude is boundless. Oh...before I forget...I remain convinced that Gotham has already saved my health and life, for real, through information shared at Gotham NY Health & Longevity which I co-chair with Ben. Could be that Fred is the reincarnation of Ponce De Lyon!

Great subject Derf . Do not despair Paul . I live in the woods as a hermit and a recluse with my wife Diane . Longevity thrives in our environment . I live amongst the animals . Gotham is one of my few interactions with other humans . The fire Marshall . The sheriff. A few meth lab outlaws . Some musicians . A Hell's Angel or two. So I walk into my spot in the woods behind the barn . The squirrels don't run away . The birds don't screach my arrival . They hang around . The dogs listen to what I have to say and politely talk back in their own language . I know I'm being watched . But I also know I'm part of their pack now . It took a while to gain acceptance . My psyche had to be at rest before they included me . The Cooper Hawk gets a little closer every day . But nobody really scatters anymore . "Oh , it's our human ." They say . I'm content to light a fire and read a good book . Listen to some inspirational music . Interaction has its place but being comfortable in my own skin . Alone . Solitary . Contemplating . That's the ticket . The fact that the animals understand me . My wife is beside me . Working with the dark soil and producing miracles . The local California vineyards beckoning . The Pacific a few miles down the hill . Fresh Abalone and calamari . And a humidor full of Cigars from all over the world . A memory with each puff . That's my longevity plan . In the now .
