Tradition

Driving around my neighborhood on Memorial Day, I made the following observation. My house was the only one displaying the American flag. A little disconcerting.

Growing up, my father religiously put the flag out on our front porch in Brooklyn on Memorial Day, July Fourth and probably a few other holidays during the year. I don’t really remember talking about it -- the flag was just part of the tradition. We weren’t alone. The American flag flew all over the place in our neighborhood.

Yet yesterday, at least in my neighborhood, the tradition had clearly lapsed and that is sad to me.

How about you? Did the American flag fly in your neighborhood on Memorial Day?

I think a lot of that involves how ingrained in the tradition the residents of a nabe are and frankly as there always seems to exists insufficient interaction with what I call "newcomers" the importance of placing a flag outside one's dwelling does not get shared. I wonder if it gets touched on in schools these days -- especially in the early grades. While the parades get coverage, I do not recall any past or recent emphasis on Flag Flying on homes. It might be an interesting bridge - building projects; I will share that with a friend for whom bridge-building is the main part of his gig.

We are the only ones on our street with a flag and it is minimally displayed in our town. Interesting though that just one town over (Foxborough, MA - home of the New England Patriots) they are widely displayed. I wonder what this means. Paula from Boston.

We have a couple of small American flags we put out on Memorial day and The Fourth of July. I have to give my wife the credit as I normally would forget that kind of important detail. There are a few in my neighborhood.

It's only important if you want to let the world know you value real freedom and those who have sacrificed to keep it alive. For many it seems that they don't understand what real freedom means and each day as it appears to be slipping away.
