Prom Season

Prom season is upon us. Dresses -- matching tuxedos – flowers – dates -- pre-party – limos -- after-party -- and the list continues

Growing up in Brooklyn, I did not experience any aspect of prom season for the simple reason that we did not have one. But living now on Long Island, the role of prom as a rite-of-passage comes through loud and clear.

Will you share with us a prom experience?

When I brought my prom date home at the end of the night her future husband was waiting in the bushes (they eventually married and divorced).

I eventually married my prom date and we still have our prom picture in our living room. I look like Billy Ray Cyrus with my 1980's mullet and my wife looks like Madonna with her teased up hair.

My high school prom was back in the mid-70s, a simpler time; we were 18, and on that occasion, we double-dated. My friend Keith and I surprised our dates -- told them we'd be going to Jones Beach after the prom. However, we drove to the beach entrance, then abruptly turned around, and (as he and I had planned, but hadn't shared with our dates) we met up on the SUNY Old Westbury campus. While the young ladies waited briefly in one of the cars, Keith and I went to the trunks of our cars, where we had all the fixings for a fancy picnic, including a table, tablecloth, 4 chairs, 2 candlesticks, champagne, crystal flutes, caviar, etc. We set it up in the middle of a large field, and then retrieved the ladies, walking them toward the two tiny points of candle light in the distance. After a nice picnic, we all changed out of our prom formal clothes and climbed a hill to watch sunrise. And that's all I can put in print....

My mother called me just last week to ask why I look so different in two different prom pictures. My bf at the time was a year ahead of me, so I was fortunate to go to two proms. Boy, we looked different even a year later. Both proms were @ Terrace on the Park. I had a great time x2. We were both from Brooklyn, Bishop Ford and Fort Hamilton HS,...not sure why you didn't have Prom, Nancy----I'd demand a do over..lol

It's prom time in our house as well---I think I'm more excited than my son!

I had been dating some one for a couple of months and trying to think of a way to break up with him when my prom came around. He didn't want to go (I didn't want him to either and already was planning to ask a friend I knew I'd have a great time with); but when threatening to break up with me didn't work, he relented....ruining my chance to break up with him and go to prom with my friend. Imagine my surprise when he told me early in the evening he'd been planning to PROPOSE to me! He didn't because my Mother had declined his request for my hand. I wouldn't have said yes; but woke my Mom up when I got home and thanked her for saying "NO!". I got the courage to break up with him a couple of days later.

My dress was maroon jersey with a matching capelet. I loved it! I'm sure my kids would look at it now and say "yuck." After prom, we went to a club in NYC, then to the beach to watch the sunrise and then to the diner for breakfast. I then went home and passed out in my parents' bed. That's a memory they never forgot..

Back then, Alan & I were "too cool" to go to my Prom (he was a College Man), so a group of us went for dinner and to Palisades Park (remember?) and watched the sun rise from a beach...
