The Bitter Cold of the Season

I know it’s winter, but until recently it hadn’t really felt that way. I wasn’t even wearing my real winter coat.

But the last week or so in the Northeast has been brutal. So cold that the heating system in the house has to work extra hard to just take the chill out of the air. So cold that the heavy socks come out for sleeping. And so cold that you can see your breath almost as you are walking out the door.

I don’t enjoy this kind of bitter cold -- particularly when it means standing on a windy elevated LIRR platform to wait for a usually delayed train. I bundle up, heavy coat, two scarves, gloves, etc. but on days like this it doesn’t really seem to work.

I will brave the cold to head to work but I am curious if you have any tips for me to stay warm out there?

Happy New Year to everyone.

Long johns, maybe more than one pair.
As Mitch says, a hat or two.
Move to Manhattan where the trains are underground.

A hat!!!! I'm not a fan of "hat hair" but it definitely keeps me warmer.

I know that wearing a hat is the leading piece of advice -- but I have moved to ear muffs to Rona's point.

As I sit here with a space heater next to my feet (despite having the heat on high) for the very first time, I agree that this temp is (or at least feels) more brutal than anything in the past. I too have taken to earmuffs--and do not let my dogs go out without their coats, previously something reserved only for snow.

Maybe I am not the one to answer this since I have the thermostat set to 65 in my house and my office during the day, however, here are a few options - thermals - get the really thin ones at a ski shop, layers- at least 4 clothing layers before the vests and coats, scarves and instead of the hat you can go to earmuffs with a big pashmina as a hat, no hat hair and most importantly, imagine yourself standing on Bay State Road behind Marsh Chapel in mid-January and suddenly you will think there is no wind and maybe it is not quite that cold after all : )

it's so coldI passed a dog that was still stuck to the hydrant.

Hat or Hood as previously stated by Rona and Fred! Remote start on the car! So far my landlord has allowed us to run out of heat twice by running out of oil: 50 in the house!!! BRRRRR. Got out the electric throw.

The thing that really stinks in this weather reminds how dress clothes do not adequately match up with need to keep warm. I often will wear a down vest under my suit jacket and which I covered with a warm over coat. I am testing NBA socks which are black and almost knee high -- and warm, as an alternate to my usual dress socks.

Great advice from everyone. Here's another idea, fleece lined tights/leggings will help keep your legs warm.
