(Anticipating a) Grand (Day At The) Junction

With Thanksgiving and for many of us a long weekend approaching, I find it nice to anticipate gatherings of families and friends.

Every Thanksgiving involves memories and traditions. Some revolve around the food and how we prepare it. Others peculiar to some celebrants.

Music remains important to me and one tradition started when I listened to the original free-from WNEW-FM back in the day. My fave DJ, the late Pete Fornatale, would play Alice’s Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. Years later it would grace my turntable or my iTunes.

A few may also still have the LP (and even a turntable. You?). For those who lack it electronically and/ or missed or forgot the opportunity to listen again click here or the link above. You may also enjoy a second version which includes a cute 1976 story of the missing 18 minutes of President Nixon’s White House tapes (skip to 17:44 if you wish).

For your short-term reading pleasure consider Rolling Stone’s 2014 article on the story of the song.

As often has been the case since Shelly and I married, we again plan to host on Thanksgiving. Indeed, our very first Thanksgiving we hosted in our apartment and the next day moved into our still current home, which my daughter some years ago named Grand Junction (after a Rusty Young-penned Poco instrumental). This year, on the next day we gather to dine and more with many of our closest friends.

Got plans? Hosting? Visiting? Do tell (share)?

We'll be celebrating Thanksgiving by going to Delray Beach for a week. This has become an annual trip to see Jerry's (adult) kids and various family and friends. Some live in, or near, Delray and the rest travel. Thanksgiving day will be spent at the home of Jerry's first wife (we're one big happy family) and the rest of the week will involve parties at others' homes near the area. Oh and there will be LOTS of music!

What development(s)? Mom lives in Huntington Lakes. Other friends live there. Marisa is flying there from LA this year.

We go to Mitch thankfully. I bring the whiskey. He cooks the turkey. I am also one of the 38% of the people who nap after the Thanksgiving meal. Hopefully, the couch is still there.

I am thinking Nouveau Beaujoulais. Wonder if Paul joins me on that. When my family owned its store, always got the pick of the best.

Planning to view the parade from our NYC office which is directly accross the street from Macy's on 34th st. Sixth floor means you are eye to eye with the floats, amazing. Then it's off to Chinatown for a small Thanksgiving late lunch. We skip the family dinner when going to the parade.

We will be hosting this year. My kids will be with the “ex” as it is an “odd” year as per stipulation of settlement. Musically it’s been a busy ride the last few weeks: Bruno Mars, Brand-X, John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring With Mahavishnu Orchestra, Dead & Co., Get The Led Out, Wonderous Stories and will cap it off with Acoustic Hot Tuna at City Winery on Thanksgiving Eve, this coming Wednesday.

Thanks for the link to missing 18 minutes of Richard M. Nixon and looking forward to some fair and balanced posting so please post some links to Hillary R. Clinton’s missing hard drive, 30,000 emails and John Podesta’s dossier.

Enjoy the Turkey and suggest we all give political discussions a break for the holiday as we give thanks for Family, Friends, Colleagues, medical professionals, police, first responders and our military and veterans.

God bless our (still) United States of America).

Thank you Corey for reminding me of one of my favorite songs ( and movies) every Thanksgiving. Thanks to you it plays in the background as we prepare our traditional Thanksgiving breakfast. Lucky Daniel--watching the parade is also a tradition for our family but something we do on TV as we either finish meal preparation or "fixins" preparations, depending on which member of the family is hosting. Gratefully this year both daughters will be here, but unfortunately all nieces, nephews and stepchildren will not.

Cannot post information from the Russkies. But very glad you carrying that musical torch!
