It's All About the Sides

Categories

I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is almost upon us. And for the first time in several years, I am hosting.

While for most people on Thanksgiving the turkey is the “star” of the show, I am all about the side dishes. I love filling my plate with a taste of every side dish and just a smidgen of turkey. Given that I am hosting, my plan is to have an assortment of sides to appease me. :)

So I am reaching out to you Gotham. Other than stuffing (which my husband makes the best) and the ubiquitous green bean casserole (which I make the best) what are your favorite side dishes and what is your recipe? And if you want to be generous and throw in an idea or two for a fun appetizers, I’ll take that too.

Interesting as I am not big on the sides and the big side is also my niece's String Bean casserole.

Try stuffed mushrooms and/or mini pepper as an appetizer.

Roasted sweet potatoes make a good side dish as do stuffed artichokes. You could also do a fall salad with nuts, blue cheese and craisins to complement the meal.

Also, artichoke dip and any type of bruscetta on good bread makes a great appetizer.

Roasted Blue Hubbard squash - bake at 350, cut side down that scoop out of the shell and finish mashing with olive oil or butter, salt and pepper.
Roasted fall vegetables - carrots, red potatoes, red onion, garlic and butternut squash - cube all of the vegetables mix with olive oil and roast at 400
Not my favorites but always a hit in our family- Swiss Chard with Lima Beans (recipe is too long for here) Brussel Sprouts with Walnut Butter (same)
Other options - cornbread made in a cast iron skillet, roasted eggplant slices with garlic, Butternut squash with thyme, roasted acorn squash slices

I love the sides too! Not much on the Turkey! Sweet potato casserole!! And yummy desserts. And of course I always made lasagna for my mom! RIP mom! Will miss making that for her this year.
