Community Halloween

I remember our first Halloween after moving into our house. It was 1998 and Jaclyn was not quite 3 years old. We had just moved in the previous summer after living in an apartment in Manhattan. Going door to door was a different experience.

We dressed up, she was a Pirate that year and it was a beautiful day.

I remember two things very vividly about that day.

We had to teach my daughter how to trick-or-treat. We learned quickly that her plan was to consume her bounty at every stop. Trust me, she picked up the skill quickly.

But perhaps my most vivid memory of our first Long Island Halloween was the swarm of young children that took over the streets around 3 pm. We knew that there were many young families in our neighborhood when we moved in but I don’t think we truly understood how many until Halloween.

Happy Halloween everyone.

When I lived in Oceanside Cove, a gated townhouse community, the seniors who lived in upstairs units would use a pulley system to lower a bucket with the candy. My kids loved that. Halloween was a huge deal in the Cove. A lot of my friends would send their kids to me to trick or treat, as they felt it was a safe place to trick or treat.

Loved when my kids, their friends and us moms all met up and followed along with the kids as they rang door bells....fun times in Syosset! Also, loved the elementary school Halloween party at Willits!

I have always loved Halloween. Unfortunately no one really comes around on my block which is very sad, when my kids were younger we would meet up with the other parents and go trick or treating in areas where you were more likely to get a lot of candy much more quickly. I have a large bowl of candy waiting, but unlikely more than one child will come---that child however will truly score--they will get it all!!!

I've always loved Halloween and have very fond memories of it. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of kids in my building, so this year Jerry and I are going to dinner and The Red Shoes ballet at City Center.

Its interesting how changing names "observe" the traditions of this day.
