And Your Name Is . . . ?

As we are all out there happily networking, we meet so many new people.  That is part of the fun, and the challenge.  The idea is to try to remember as many names as possible as you meet new friends in your travels.

We have all been there.  You show up to an event and someone comes across the room with their hand out and your name on their lips. You are scrambling in your head to try to remember where you have met this person before.

But calling someone by their name, to me, is one of the highest compliments you can bestow.  It means that you remembered them.

So, knowing that everyone suffers from not being able to remember every person’s name that we meet along the way, and taking as a given that in our hearts we really want to, what are your tricks to make sure you remember someone's name?  Or, on the flip side, what do you do when you don't?

It really makes me feel good when someone recalls my name. I read that at best we can recall some 300 or names (Gotham memberships much exceeds that!). My LinkedIn and Facebook exceeds that. My contacts exceeds both by even more. I participate in other orgs. It makes for a challenge when others may recall you and you need to somehow refresh to recall that person. I put notes in my contacts to aid in the need to refresh. Toughest recall involves seeing someone in “another” where one might not expect to see them. It even occurred today at Gotham Towers.

I barely remember my name, which makes networking a little more difficult. I tell people I meet that I will remember meeting them and our discussion but no there name. Next time I see them I just ask what there name is again.

Great Blog, and I am so glad it is not just me. I anxiously await some of the tips I hope to see from others who respond. One thing I do try to do when I sense someone else's obvious embarrassment at having forgotten my name is to put my hand out, say my name, adding, "so nice to see you again"..

When riding the circuit, I look at the group's membership list to help me put faces to names. Outside of Gotham, I check social media (LinkedIn, Twitter and FaceBook) to help with that. If I'm completely blindsided, like running into someone in the street, I usually just admit my brain block, especially if they've already addressed me by name.
