Human Capacity

I wish for us all to be more conscious of people in trouble, and to reach out whenever we can. Now I will leave it to those more wise than I to speak:

“There is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.'
No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that's our real disaster.” -Dalai Lama XIV

We don't even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward. In times of tragedy, of war, of necessity, people do amazing things. The human capacity for survival and renewal is awesome. - Isabel Allende

mel Brooks describes the difference between comecy and tragedy. Comedy is when you fall off a cliff and go tumblingdown the hill breaking all your bones. tragedy is when I get a paper cut.

Cayce. Thank you for these words of wisdom. However, I find them of limited consolation. Strength? Yes. But it is hard to find any meaning and reason for hope in what has happened and will likely continue to happen.

Hope and humanity bring us through our tragedies. Being a Rotarian and Gotham member and seeing all the ways people come together to help each other iis inspiring. We sometimes let the horrors dominate our feelings about humans. When really it is humanity of one person or many that helps us through so many tragedies.
Daniel Schwartz

Unfortunately humans have the emotion of hate. With that, the uncontrollable rage can trigger the most hideous actions. Trying to control that has been the challenge of the human race since day one. Good can prevail, but one evil person can ruin it for many as history has proven again and again. That seems to be the everlasting challenge we face.

Yes.
Thank you for your thoughtful words.

Its not about controlling it, its about transforming it. Happens through kind human interchange, especially with those we don't understand. We will always have the challenge of becoming more humane.

When my radio went off to wake me this morning I cringed in fear, afraid of what I might hear. The range of emotions I am seeing in response to so many horrors is difficult to take in, and, I must admit that late last night I could not control my own outbursts in private in response to what I was seeing as I watched the news. It is becoming more difficult for me not to lose hope as I watch some of the responses I am seeing, but then the resolve of my youth begins to kick in,---hopefully that resolve prevails. Empathy, human decency, ethics, civility, understanding that it is not all about "us" or "I". Actually, I believe it was the coroner that spoke last evening who epitomized all of that when he explained how they were attempting to deal with the carnage in Los Vegas, and his understanding of the needs of the victims families.
