How Can We Help?

We have family and friends in Florida.  We have family and friends in Texas.

Watching the back to back devastation caused by two catastrophic storms over the last few weeks has been difficult.  As Rona blogged yesterday, the memories for those who lived through Sandy are real.

For me, the worst part has been a profound feeling of helplessness.  Mother Nature is strong willed and literally, has her own sense of direction.  While our family was evacuating the east coast of Florida up to the middle of the state, Mother Nature had a different plan and just followed them up to Orlando.

Happily, the damage in Florida was not as bad as it could have been but I expect once we have real information, it will turn out to have been pretty bad.

Help me overcome that feeling of helpfulness. Let’s all figure out how to offer some help in whatever way we can. For those of you who survived Sandy, I would be curious to hear what you found to be of most help in the days right after.

I will blog Friday about how much people care about our Florida plight. Oh the humanity!

Try to find ways to contribute to locally listed charities, those that ask for straight donations and those that will buy food and water. They are easy to find on line. While it is easier to "give to the Red Cross," it has been my experience that the money goes directly to those who need it, when I take the trouble to find out who is really doing the work. When I was younger and healthier, I would have gone down to help the way I did for Katrina. I used to spend a lot of time with friends in New Orleans. During Sandy, a couple stayed with me for two months.

Staying touch, if possible to those that were affected. I found having phone support just as helpful when the power was off as having someone drop by. We were lucky with Sandy in that there was minimal damage and no flooding. Power was off for just a week. Having a hot meal was nice too (Steve L. TY).
I am still waiting to hear how my properties were affected by Irma. To me, the wait is the hardest part.
