Harvey, Irma, Jose and who else...

As the folks in the Houston area are recovering, Floridians are bracing themselves. As I write this Hurricane Irma is just starting to hit the keys...see here. Apparently it hit Cuba and the wind speeds have descreased to only 130 mph and who knows where Jose will land.

I was curious this morning to know if there were other significant weather events in the US this year and lo and behold our government keeps track of these things. The NOAA has a table that lists all of the billion dollar events. Would it surprise you that, as of July 7th, we've had 7 severe weather events that resulted in billions of dollars in losses and 57 deaths? If you're interested, here's the link the the list Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters. Obviously it has to be updated.

As Nancy's eloquent email delivered yesterday stated.."Gotham stands up to help." If you'd like to help folks who are being severely impacted, please go to www.gothamfoundation.org and donate. Remember to note that your donation is specifically for Hurricane Relief. I have already donated money for this purpose.

Here's hoping that the Irma, Jose and whoever else comes along takes it easy on us.

Fred, hope your house remains standing and your friends in Key West are ok! My relatives and friends in various parts of Florida are all hunkered down. 2 did drive up to New York. For the rest - Thoughts, prayers and donations. Let's hope no one else is coming!!!

Every time (early and late in the day the last few weeks), I get to view the news, the magnitude of Irma really transcends anything I can recall.

We were in Florida last weekend and left on Tuesday. We saw the best and the worst of people. The hotel personnel, who were Floridians, reached out to us to ensure that we had flight reservations to leave before the storm and offered help if we didn't. The worst was a gas station that, on Tuesday morning, was already charging $5,99 per gallon of gas.
