Costco is Here

There has been a huge controversy going on in my town of Oceanside for approximately three years. It began when Costco filed permits to build one of their warehouses in Oceanside. Immediately those opposed to the project began letting their voices loudly be heard, at Town of Hempstead and local meetings. Their objections were varied from traffic concerns to the effect a Costco might have on the  local small  businesses.

Costco fans who were supporting the project were less vocal but still voiced their support for the construction.  They argued that the prices of groceries would go down for most families in the area, it would be a good source of employment. and might actually drive traffic to the other businesses in town.

Despite the controversy, Costco in Oceanside officially opened its doors this week.  My husband is a self professed Costco super fan and was exultant to see it open. I was a bit conflicted, having spoken over the past few years to several opponents of the project. On Tuesday night we attended a Costco open house. The moment I walked in, I was pleased to see several people I knew who were now Costco employees, especially one man who had lost his job over a year ago. They were all thrilled to be employed and talked about the benefits available to them as  Costco employees.

I remain  hopeful that Costco will ultimately have a positive impact on my town. In the meantime I am going to enjoy the Ugg rain boots that I bought there this week for $49.99 but which  retail in Nordstroms for $79.99. At least, Costco will have a positive effect on my shoe closet. Are you a Costco fan?

Generally have an issue especially on the compensation (aka wages and benefits) front.

Do like folks being able to save their pennies.

I posted the blog to the politics site so we'll see.

I've long been a Costco fan, however I recognize that for all the pluses there are some potential negatives to local retail. Better Costco than Wal-Mart, though: Costco compensates people much better than many other retailers yet keeps low prices through its partnerships with retailers and its excellent logistics. Traditionally Wal-Mart has depended on government programs to subsidize the poor wages it pays.

I am a member, but rarely go. Those of you who know me know I am very particular (for many reasons) about what I purchase, and over the years Costco offers less of those things---I have also taken to having them ship many of the staples I do purchase from them, however believe it or not, Whole Foods sells many of the items at competitive prices and I don't need to buy a gazillion of the item. That said, I am planning on going for some of my Rosh Hashannah order, cannot beat the prices for lox and whitefish salad, etc.

I just got another Ipad there for $70. less than Apple.

I like Costco, but find ithard to get out of there for under $200. And I find that I buy way more of things than I need. (Ketchup on wheels anyone?) Paul is a much better and more focused shopper than I am. I tend to get distracted by all the great "deals"!!

I like having the option of Costco. I also don't think buying mega-sized items is too smart. You either use it faster so it doesn't go bad (not healthy) or end up throwing it out. I find supermarket sale items and the dreaded Walmart or Target to have similar prices for smaller sized items. With that said, you do find non-perishable items cheaper at times if you shop wisely. Maui Jim sunglasses, never discounted, for $99 (usually over $200). Can't find that anywhere else.

Not a fan of these stores - Costco or BJ's I would rather shop on Jet.com, get my American Airlines miles, and have packages that I can store and I don't even live in an apartment. Also, I can think of better things to do with an hour and a half than wander the aisles in one of these stores only to discover that they no longer carry the items that you kept your membership for ...

My friends who now work there seem thrilled for the benefits offered to them.

OMG!! I almost bought the same thing. It is a problem, getting in and out and keeping to the list. I didn't need new rain boots but they were only $49. . .

Not really my thing. Not a good fit for Manhattan. They wanted to open one up on West 15th when I lived over there, but the trucks etc and neighborhood protests made it unfeasible. Glad if people have work and benefits, but wonder how the smaller businesses will do.
