Pay It Forward

One day last week I was working my way towards the E train at Penn Station. It had been tough morning. I was running late and everything had fought with me. I walked out of my house without my keys -- which made me miss my train -- the train I did catch was running late and crowded. We all know that kind of morning. It doesn’t usually bode well for the rest of the day.

Just as I was reaching the E Train, I walked by another commuter and we caught eyes. She smiled and said, “I’ve been admiring your dress. I really like it.”

That small act of kindness completely turned my day around. My grumpy start evaporated right there in that moment.

“Thank you,” I said in response. “You just made my day”. We smiled at each other and continued along with our respective days.

It felt great to be the recipient of that random act and it was a personal reminder of how powerful a smile and a kind word can be.

[And PS, how about that eclipse today! Anyone want to make a date for 2024?]

The eclipse was shaped like a smile!

I consciously do that a lot, compliment someone on their dress, shoes, bag etc. It's amazing how a few words can just make someone's day.

I went to a gathering on Sunday of people from diverse backgrounds, religions, ethnicities all of whom came together to share a common goal---interestingly one of the strongest messages of the day was exactly what you shared---how we should connect with each other and share a kind word, not just walk past each other as we go about our lives. A smile and a kind word go a very long way, not just towards making someone feel better, but to towards building bridges. Thank you Nancy.

I love paying compliments, holding a door or the elevator open, stopping to help give directions, etc. It doesn't take much to make people smile and maybe turn their day around. And, honestly, seeing someone smile makes me feel good.

I enjoy bringing smiles as well as receiving them. It's grand.

"That small act of kindness completely turned my day around. My grumpy start evaporated right there in that moment." So simple. So brilliant. So day and life changing. Thank you for the reminder.

That was real nice.
I never think much about it but I am not shy about complimenting when I like something; glad to realize the positive impact it can make. Told Shelly Niagara Fall in 2014!
