The Only Thing I Can Write About

I think, or at least I hope, we can all agree that hate begets evil.

 

 

What we all witnessed this past weekend in Charlottesville, to me was unspeakable tragedy. I simply do not see a place for hate for the sake of itself in our country. We need unity, not separateness; positive support, not hate-speak and certainly never violence.

 

 

I have tried to compile the right adjectives, but quite honestly, I have failed every time. You may know that I am not a stranger to expression, but this time I just can’t find the right words.

 

 

As the weekend progressed, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that my oldest child at one point had her heart set on attending the University of Virginia. Had she been in town, I know she would have been at the protest. That makes me both proud and very, very scared.

 

 

I don’t know that this blog is the right opportunity to share how disturbing I found the events of this past weekend. I do know that I could not bring myself to write about anything else.

 

 

We can’t miss the opportunity to speak out against hate.

These hateful people have the nerve to call themselves Americans and patriots. They are too ignorant and racist to realize that what makes America great is that it is the great melting pot of all kinds of people. It is encouraging to see these racists being called out and reaping the consequences for their hateful views.

Your first line mirrors my own thoughts. I've been reading a series of books where the main character keeps saying "Death begets death." I kept thinking all weekend, "hate begets hate."

As I listened to the words of Heather Heyer's mother I was both heartbroken and inspired. I find myself, uncharacteristically, unable to truly express all that I am feeling and thinking. I do know that until my daughter returned from a protest she felt compelled to attend last night my heart was in my mouth--I knew she was where she needed to be---I know she left in a shirt that read "Love Trumps Hate" ---the fact that I needed to be as fearful as I was is intolerable.

It reflects a discussion I had several years back with the exec dir of Queens Jewish Community Council when I was a VP there and also chair of my local NE Queens JCC. Their were several incidents and our discussion involved whether just to report it to and work with the NYPD and affected institutions or issue a statement. We decided it was important to issue a statement, and we did. The Jewish Community Councils of Greater New York and Long Island also prepared a strong joint statement that I signed my JCC onto (under my name)
