Obsession

When I was young, being a Yankee fan, I was obsessed with Mickey Mantle.  Mantle was the Yankee Key Man (last 3 letters of first name and first 3 of second).  The Mick, despite his frequent injuries and leg problems carried me through the thrilling 50s and much of the 60s. His career ending was sad and he once said if he knew he was going to live as long as he did he would have taken better care of himself (his dad died at 39 and Mick liked the sauce and night life).

I'm still a Yankee fan and I never thought I would have another Yankee to idolize.  And then along came this 6'7", 282 pound amiable, gap toothed giant, Aaron Judge, a latter day Paul Bunyon who was adopted at birth and brought up to be a seeming well mannered, soft spoken paragon of virtue who boarders on being too good to be true.

Here's the problem, after the All Star game, his dream Home Run Derby winning season seemed to be unraveling   before my adoring eyes.  At one point he has just one (dribbler) hit in his first 21 post Home Run Derby at bats.

His fall off bothered me  so much that I stopped watching the games. It could make a grown man cry.  That's the down side of obsession!

Yes it is very sad when you see your Idol waver - BUT.....HE'LL BE BACK. and it shows HOW much you love him - because you feel his pain. It also show the magnitude of your empathy.
that is true love. :0)

I ended my obsession with my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers when they left town May 28, 1957. They were not replaceable, but 21 days later I met Shelley and I've been hi on life ever since

Be strong, Fred! Considering all that's swirling around us, this is a delicious diversion. Judge will overcome!!

I don't follow baseball, however your description of this young man paints more than just a good ball player---and for that I hope he re-finds his stride.

Have FAITH! :) Ups and downs are inevitable. Adversity makes for better heroes (and people)! Think Luke Skywalker...... ;)

What ? You need something to bring you down ? You just won a championship for God's sakes . After Gardy's walk off last night our gapped tooth hero has a chipped tooth to add to his dental woes . What bothers me for the dog days ahead is that group of unknown middle relievers who don't appear to be very solid . Pitching . It's been an Achilles heal for the Yanks ! Meantime Aaron ain't no Mick ...... Yet ! It's been great to root with confidence again since Jete left . TRACK WALL SEE YA !!
