My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart," he told the campaign crowd Thursday. "You show your patriotism by how you treat your fellow Americans, especially those who serve. You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals. That’s what we have to lead with is our values and our ideals. - Barack Obama

Patriotism is not a short frenzied burst of emotion, but the long and steady dedication of a lifetime. - Thomas Jefferson

Presidents

I look forward to a great future for America - a future in which our country will match its military strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose. - John F. Kennedy

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. - Abraham Lincoln

Certainly in the next 50 years we shall see a woman president, perhaps sooner than you think. A woman can and should be able to do any political job that a man can do. - Richard Nixon

Words matter, as does what is in one's heart and mind.

I can get provocative here but there exist concept greater than patriotism and loyalty to one's country. Loyalty to country in my world view, means loyalty to the truth; so in that regard some might view my patriotism as subversive. Not sure if a blog will outline this further (unless it muses me) but loyalty got covered by me directly or otherwise in past Gotham blogs.

We were on our friends' boat last night waiting to watch the Jones Beach fireworks. I cannot tell you how many smaller fireworks displays we watched over the horizon as we were waiting for "the big show." It reminded me about patriotism and what it means to be an American. No matter what is happening now, sometimes we have to remember how lucky we are to live here..
