To Wash or Not to Wash?

I read an article recently about how often to wash your jeans. The theory is that jeans should not be washed unless they are dirty, as in having a stain because your ice cream sundae left its mark. Washing jeans too frequently apparently makes them stretch in unintended ways and accelerates the fading in ways you may not desire. So, wear them for weeks, and the launder in cold water and hang to dry.

Newscasters, celebrities, and lots of others agreed.

I can’t wrap my head around walking away from the washing machine. I can see wearing my jeans a second time perhaps, but not for weeks on end.

Any opinions on this subject?

I'm certain both you and Fred could go weeks without washing your jeans and no one would be the wiser, unless people started noticing just how hip you both are. I think its ok, to be frank, if you are bathing everyday and changing into clean undergarments everyday, its not a big deal. I'm an old hippie, so unless you are particulary toxic(ie smelly) Go for it!

I agree with Cayce. Shower daily, wear clean undergarments and the jeans could go a few weeks, especially if only worn on the weekends or evenings. Now if you get them sweaty on a hot summer day or have pets that may jump on you leaving their hair or other elements on you, yes please wash them. Denim weakens dramatically with each wash. With many prefaded and washed looks, they are already weak to begin with (think of the pumice stones tumbled in the manufacturing process to soften and make them look worn). If you love your jeans, wash them less frequently.

I have a pair I dry clean so I can enjoy wearing a pair of jeans on certain nights out with the Mrs. I have two other pair for regular use that I wear for recreational use and when needed Shelly washes them.

4 kids. Lots of jeans. When they are all home it feels like I'm washing jeans every day! For us, a wear or two then in they go.

Whatever you do with them do not call them dungarees. . . . Our kids find that word hysterical.
