Subway Seat

Categories
City Blogs

I have been taking the subway to work for 50 years and have had many experiences, both good and bad, in my travels.

However, last week I had a poignant, unique under ground experience as I entered a crowded car on the way into work.  As I entered a younger man gestured to me and offered to give me his seat.

Despite the fact that it was unexpected and unsolicited, I did not hesitate or waiver.  I surprised myself by accepting the seat.

Afterwards as I mulled the shocking experience over I pondered why he offered it up.  Do I look old?  Do I look tired?  Did I look like I was in need?  Maybe I was just having a bad day.  However, this week the novel experience repeated itself as a young woman made the gesture.

I discussed it with Joanne and she advised that I pull back my shoulders and stand up straight.

P.S. I did not accept the woman's seat.  Maybe that's progress...

As my dear friend Sonia would say, it's none of your business what their reasons are. If you want the seat, take the seat. You're the most fit person any of us know, be gentle on yourself and don't worry. xo

Cayce is right. It's none of your business what their reasons are. Think of it as lovely caring gestures for your fellow person. You've probably offered your seat to many out of kindness.

Maybe they were simply practicing random acts of kindness.

I tend to overthink things, a trait I would like to modify while I am able to enjoy the results of doing so. Whether you want to accept the seat or not, a kind gesture should always be acknowledged as what it is, a thoughtful act on the part of whoever offered the seat, whatever prompted the offer. For what it is worth, you don't look "old" to me, but given your description the offerees were indeed your juniors---they were doing a nice thing.

Thank God for our wives . Not less than 5 minutes ago Diane chewed me out for not working hard enough in my recovery from a major stroke 2 years ago . The equivalent of get your shit together and stop slacking . So from paralysis to walking , driving and independence . It's not enough . Pulling my shoulders back and driving through the wall . For Diane and Joanne and for ourselves. DONT TAKE THE SEAT BRO ! You are too young ! Read the Post standing up !!

Isn't it better to give than receive? I cheerfully decline as I have never accepted an offer of a seat and I'm thankful that the offers are infrequent. I thought I was older than you?
