Between Generations

Last weekend, we went to Washington to visit our children, Jeremy (and Stephanie) and Mea (and Charles), who live in the nation's capital. We like Washington and having family to visit makes the trips their even more special.

But this trip was very special. We drove down to D.C. with a very special passenger.

When she heard that we were driving to Washington, my Mom asked for a ride. Grandma was going to spend the weekend with her granddaughter, Mea.

"I just need a ride. Drop me off at Mea and Charles's and take me home after the weekend. I'll stay with them, they'll show me around, and I won't bother you."

And so it was -- although we did all meet for dinner on Saturday night.

I admire my Mom. I admire my daughter. I admire their relationship.

Let's face it, Mom has what it takes!

We should ALL be giving rides to Esther, whenever and whatever she wants. There would be no Jeremy, Mea or BEN without her. She is a light in the world.

Special across the generations relationships mean so much and I enjoy observing them and learning about others. They are to be cherished.

My grandmother was possibly the most important person in my life as I grew up. I cherished our relationship. My daughters don't have that, all of their grandparents have passed away, but I am delighted that at least they both have memories of my mother---something I work very hard to ensure remains with them. Each holiday we incorporate something from "grandma"--food, a tradition, a thought-- each occasion someone wears a piece of grandma's jewelry. And yes, traditions from their grandfathers are included as well.
