Schlepper

All my life I've thought about being a schlepper.

Schlepper?  It is a Yiddish word meaning someone so stupid or ill educated that he or she can only be employed to carry (schlep) things.

Really. To be precise, for my whole life I have wanted to be a schlepper for a famous artist and now my dream has come true as I schlepped my wife Joanne Klein's beautiful art (sample above) over to the wonderful Helen Harrison Gallery for an opening last week.

And when I unpacked the pieces I had schlepped and Helen cast her eyes on them for the first time her face lit up in the most satisfyingly  spontaneous affirmation of her appreciation of Joanne's unique artistic talent (and to a far lesser degree, my toil)!

At the Opening I morphed from the schlepper to an annoyingly busy photographer and Facebook poster.

One might say I'm on the way up.

So gratifying that you have realized your true calling. The man behind the artist.

Love it! You've always been the Steadman to her Oprah! ;)
Jo's art is profound and powerful. . . . so excoted for you both!

In my business we call that a roadie :)

Love it. I used to joke about being a schlepper, that I can fit my whole house in my pocketbook. Now, I hate schlepping anything-I carry a very small bag. With age comes wisdom and a desire not to schlep.

Let's put things in perspective here . I would schlep to the end of the universe for certain people . Joanne and Fred being included . I was born to schlep. I resent the inept and or stupid connotation that goes along with it . I have raised 7 kids . Talk about a schlep ! From 1969 thru present day . Last week I schlepped a pair of football cleats to Fedex to send to my Marine Lieutenant in Quantico . The junior officers were playing the senior officers in a tackle football game . Luke scored a TD with those cleats. But they lost . Over the years.... School lunches forgotten in the kitchen....baseball gloves....... Basketball shoes .....uniforms..... Term papers ..... Etc. The problem compounded by a 15 mile one way trip down the mountain . I schlepped 20 pound sides of beef in the cargo hold of 4 engine jets from Brazil to Portugal ( where a good steak was hard to come by ) I schlepped canolis from Rome to Archer's house in Roslyn . I schlepped brass candle sticks from Cairo to my home in California . I've schlepped kids to each of the 7 continents . Life is one big schlepp if you think about it .

Does running a marathon fit the definition?

Wonderful post. My husband refers to himself as my Sherpa. Especially when we travel. He's always there to help me schlep my luggage, and everything else.
