The Boston Marathon

Categories
Lifestyle

When I was young I was addicted to long distance running. In fact I finished 33 (26.2 mile) marathons in my running career, but the only one that mattered was the Mecca of distance running: The Boston Marathon.

"Boston" was the goal and inorder to be eligible to participate you had to achieve a qualifying time (under 3 hours and 10 minutes) at another marathon and inorder to do that one had to train very hard. So hard that you had to run every day and sometimes twice a day.

It was morning, noon and night at the expense of family and life as I knew it.

Eventually I qualified and ran the 1983 Boston Marathon. I was so proud and as I ran the difficult race I fortified myself with the thought that my family was waiting for me at the finish line and when it was over I would make it up to them.

30 years ago was a far more innocent and simple time. We mourn Boston's loss.

A great remembrance of a your race 30 years ago. What a horror for this year's participants and their families. Surveillance tapes are great; however, they didn't save the innocent from being killed and maimed. What type of world are we leaving to future generations?

And then the music stopped.

Fred, thanks for that first-hand view. Perhaps you might post that classic photo of that guy running, back then?

The most imporant Boston Marathon will be the 2014 running. We've got to prove that the terrorists can't stop us from living our lives. That's the best way to defeat them.

As we are coming to learn this morning.... two young brothers ages 26 and 19 are responsible and the reasons why are still baffling.

You really gave a picture of what it must have felt like to be one of the runners that day.

I remain really bothered by the tragic losses and violence inflicted on families. When I attend an event a citifield they check out bags and any knapsacks etc.
It may be hard to do that an entire route of a marathon, but perhaps as with Times Square during New Years, barricades etc can be set up at areas with large crowds, particularly around the finish, and bags searched. Just maybe......

Can you imagine what it must have felt like to be completely tapped out both physically and mentally with the finish line in sight and then have to react to that? What a mess.
