Happy Anniversary

In January 2007, Apple announced that the first iPhone would shortly be released. It has been ten years since Apple’s first smartphone.

Can it only be ten years ago? I was a late convert to iPhone, hanging on to my treasured Blackberry until my office manager literally refused to order me a new one. But the concept of smartphone was, and continues to be, revolutionary. The ease of having all information literally at your fingertips, whether your own or information that is on the web, is addictive.

Whether an Apple or Android devotee, can you remember life before your smartphone?

Mine recently died and you have no idea how much it has taken over until you've lost contact.

Yes and I remember slide rules and pantyhose, but none of them serve me anymore. It is a great tool for improving my life and I work to not abuse myself with it.

i really like when machines make it easy to run my life. Just to have my calendar the way it works for me. My contacts. My Music (very important) and access to anything I want. For years I thought a way to play all my music in my car. Cassettes would jam or get stuck; CDs would skip, get stuck....

I do remember times before Smart Phones and cell phones for that matter. When I first started at Carr in 2000 (cell phones were rather rare and expensive), we were issued pagers with the ability to receive a beep when we got a voice mail at the office. Having quarters in your pocket was a must in sales for both calls and meters. I remember calling my voice mail at work when in the field, writing down the message and then just popping in to a client minutes later. They thought I was a magician reading their minds as to how I was able to be there so quick after a call. That to us was big technology and so useful. Today, it so archaic when you can just call or email your message directly. The next big thing will be chips implanted to receive info and provide access to secure areas. It is happening already. Scary stuff this technology.

An amazing invention! Has anyone seen a pay phone recently? I wonder what we'll be using in 10 years from now.

Sometimes its more of a curse than a blessing. Out to dinner last night I saw an email from a client that I felt had to be answered. Still need to learn how to turn myself off. . . .
