Sometimes In Winter - A Snow Day

Snow, Basketball, Winder

I already played two hours of (basket)ball, enough of a workout for any day. I did not anticipate that hours later another workout loomed.

When I left early to drop off Shelly’s dad at a medical appointment before heading to the school to play, it snowed lightly. By the time a reached the school there was an inch covering the sidewalk. I was dressed to play, just needing to unzip my hoody (I brought jeans for after.) When we left we all needed to brush off our cars; I ran a few errands and came own and swept my walk and sidewalk.

Looking out the window to my yard, I noticed some birds on “hanging” on the barren tree branches.  I mused how it resembled the tranquil look of the compilation Poco LP, The Forgotten Trail (See "associated" image.).

So after dinner, I ventured outside to shovel. I follow my usual procedure. I create a linear path along the perimeter of the walk and the sidewalk; then I shovel towards my front yard. I mulled a moment about whether to call it a day; I decided to continue, to clear off Shelly’s car, then mine. A second workout.

So share how you reacted to the snow. Venture out? Shovel? Break out that snow blower? Use “child labor”? Paid labor? Make a snowman? Sleigh? Ski plans?

Or perhaps something else?

While you ponder a reply, listen up.

I feel guilty. I missed one of my favorite work outs.

I usually love snowy weekends when we are snowed in with a fire in the fireplace and are forced to take a day off. This one would've been especially nice because my youngest daughter came home for her last day in New York before heading back to Washington to school after visiting Friends for a week. Unfortunately I spent the day in bed separated from my girls, with bronchitis and the flu but they carried on the tradition of cooking a hearty soup and watching movies in front of a roaring fire. Thank you for the morning music Corey.

I use a custom snow blower. His name is Gustavo. I pay him a flat fee in October and he shovels my sidewalk and driveway every time it snows. Last year he came out ahead. Let's see what this year brings

Ahhh, Manhattan life. No shoveling necessary. Watched a screener of Fences (Excellent!) and watched the beautiful snow accumulate.

I fly from one snowstorm to another, Denver to New York.

We traveled to my brother-in-law's house for a post Hannukah Hanukah celebration. It os usually a 20 minute drive, Oceanside to Bellmore. It took over an hour to get there. Getting home was much easier.

My 9 year old Joe wanted to shovel, so for the first time I gave him the larger "adult" shovel that my day got from Sears when I was his age. He enjoyed it so much, he did several of our neighbor's walkways. A bit later, on his third run, our next door neighbor gave him $10 (not expected) and he insisted on ensuring his path was clear until the early evening when we watched the Rangers play. Great lesson learned in value. He is out there right now shoveling again...

:)
Feel better
As to fire place I only have access to a virtual one that looks real on the big screen Tele.

Now we know who to fault! Could you have waited to fly?

I went to the gym yesterday and today. I let my son Jared shovel. Watching football (lousy games) all weekend long plus I cleaned out my home files.

Thanks for sharing the BS&T's "sometimes in winter". The imagery of having connubial relations outdoors during summer made my day !

STEVE,
YW!
I sort of expected you to get the BST above anyone else!
Agree on the football (but my brother is long-time fins fan and our step brother roots Steel).

I was surprised by how much we had by the time I ventured out! We don't shovel during. We stay inside, enjoy the peacefulness of the snowfall, make fresh cookies, and have a drink!

Rob, you are still young and virile. As you mature, frequent shoveling or sweeping of lighter loads involves much less strenuous and stressful activities.

I recall certain partial north south routes not rear highways where you just get stuck without any options whether in Queens, Nassau or Suffolk. A long time ago Lakeville Road some years ago was like that for me.

I use child labor and love telling the boys, it's a better workout than the gym (even if it's not).

It's actually a good thing. I have a story my mom related concerning her cousin who should have been shoveling instead of.......(next TW ride).
