It's Goal Setting Time

Or maybe it isn’t.

At New Year’s every year, I set goals. You could call them resolutions. I prefer goals. My goals range from personal to work, small to large. And they always include something about weight.

With all candor, I don’t always achieve my goals. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I get close. But to me, it doesn’t matter because I appreciate the process. It makes me focus on what is important at any given point in time.

One personal goal for 2017 is to put my electronics down when engaged in a conversation. As I multi-task through the day, my cellphone is a lifeline to all of the various balls in the air. But, I think that also makes me less present in the moment.

So there you have it – if I check my phone while we are talking, make me stop.

Are you a goal setter? Does New Year’s bring that out in you?

How could we have a Tribal meeting without our phones?

That's a great idea, I will do the same, I want to be present in all conversations/. Thanks

I know in our house, no electronics are permitted at the dinner table. I think the same curtesy should be shown to live meetings with one another. By the way, the watches hooked to your phone allow for some glancing of those vibrating phones without pulling it out...can make it a bit less noticeable, but still a bad habit in my opinion.

I think there is a distinction between Goals and Resolutions - wrote about it two weeks ago https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/resolutions-goals-great-2017-anne-kleinman -

I'm going to keep you to that one.

My house has the same rule as Dan's house. And that rule is extended to restaurants.

Congratulations! You did not check your phone once during our meeting today. :)

I put my phone on vibrate and typically keep it in my pocket or purse when having a conversation with someone or in meetings. If there's an important reason why I need to have it within eyesight, I explain to the person I'm with.

Regarding goals, I make changes as they come to mind. Waiting for a New Year or new day doesn't seem productive.

Interesting goal
As most know, my devices run silent so outside of the office unless I am streaming I need to see the phone flashing to get a call, and if its in my pocket.....
My son bought me an iPad and I find it very convenient and I may rely a bit less on newsprint as a result.
My practice remains to keep resos and goals to myself.
