Bait and Switch

I really really like CVS.  Maybe I'm even addicted.  So much so that I feel for our long term local pharmacy, but how can one resist the avalanche of discount mailers and bonuses that spew out when you pay?

Last (Black) Friday I was armed with saved discount chits and slips. I attacked with the plan that the more I bought the more I'd save.  In the frenzied process I cornered the market on vitamins (without regard to those annoying expiration dates).

Purchases completed and line endured, I rolled up to the check out counter only to be crushed by the news that my chits had expired. Little solice that I was given the option to return my purchases.

All in all, it was the perfect squelch.

Maybe I should return my loyalty to the local pharmacy.  Or maybe the clerk should have reached under the register for his discount card.

Such problems!

For years, except for prescriptions, I bought most of my drugstore products from drugstore.com. The prices were much better than going to any pharmacy in my area, free delivery for purchases over $35, a $ credit purchase program and I got $ off of each order by going through ebates. In September, Walgreens terminated the drugstore.com website claiming they were going to focus on Walgreens.com. Not good. Walgreens.com doesn't offer many of the products I used to buy, the prices are worse, the ebates program less, etc.

However, the last straw was when I ran to the Walgreens store because I ran out of something I needed right away. Online this product costs $4.49, in the store it cost $10.99! I was shocked. I questioned the store manager who suggested I email Walgreens corporate as he had no answer. The answer I got from Walgreens corporate..."We do not offer the same prices in online and in stores." Unacceptable! I'm now shopping through ebates at Jet.com.

Maybe I should right a guest blog about how to save money and find out what methods other Gotham members use? :)

For those interested in getting cash back on their online purchases, here's a link to ebates:

I more concerned that you buy vitamins from CVS, than anything else in this story. You deserve better.

My experience is that no matter how you approach it the deals are better online, but when all the local stores disappear because we are all shopping online, what will we do?

CVS discounts can be huge, but they expire quickly, as you found out. Get the app. It helps.

The app actually alerts you of deals and coupons as you drive by the store.

I agree with all of the above comments - And it's a conundrum - it's a suckers game with all the coupons - but as you're already in the store ...you tend to get what you need. On line is probably better - but requires planning. However i would hate to see brick and mortar stores disappear from our streets.

Just got a 20% off certificate in mail. Relentless. Send them my blog please!

Bed Bath an Beyond honors all coupons no matter what the expiration date is

Trying to read coupon expiration dates can require a magnifying glass. One benefit of CVS, unrelated to your post, is that they fill the SilverScript prescriptions so you can pick up your medicine there if you don't get it by mail.

CVS on Black Friday ! Sorry but I'm laughing to myself . The visual of you fumbling with expired coupons at the register . No wonder the lines are long ! What were you buying ? Shaving cream ? No. Oh yeah ..... Vitamins . On Black Friday . At CVS . Why is that funny to me ? Shit . I don't know . I know Joanne must make a KILLER turkey sandwich . On white toast with extra mayo salt and pepper . I was on my second turkey sandwich and throwing tight spirals over the middle to my boys . I still got the gun . Washed down with ice cold cocoa-cola out of the green glass bottle . If Diane said " We are going to CVS with coupons to take advantage of Black Friday I would have assumed some kind of mental disturbance . Only because we live 30 miles round trip from civilization I. E the nearest town . All that being said .... I love ya brother !!
