Book Clubs

I belong to 2 Book Clubs, yet I do not read.  Rather, I  commute to the city by car and listen to books on CD.  It is a very nourishing way to pass the time.

I belong to an all male book group which is presently reading James Kaplan's great biography:  Sinatra: The Chairman. I also belong to the Gotham Book Club.

The Gotham Book Club is the brain child of my daughter in law Julie Klein and Co Chaired with her by John Buscarello.

On Wednesday the Gotham Book Club met at the Friars Club for lunch with author Lauren Acampora to discuss her deliciously creepy book:  The Wonder Garden.  Her book is set in a small North East Town and is a collection of connected short stories.

The author looked (see photo above) and acted normal.  Her stories were not.  She was so articulate, responsive and animated!  She even sang! It was a very special magical lunch.  Consider joining us for the next lunch on November 16th when the author of Never Say No To A Rock Star will preside.

Presently, I'm listening to the bio of Elon Musk.  Fascinating young man!

What are you reading (or listening to)?

i mostly read fiction - currently Ann Patchet's new book Commonwealth, Just finished Jhumpa Lahari Unaccustomed Earth. On deck Nutshell: A Novel by ian McEwan.
I also Love Eric Larson who does a great job with History. Looling forward to new Book group selection - written by a frfiend of mine :)
Benjamin Geizhals

A great breakthrough for the Gotham Book Club having the author participate in person. Congratulations!
John Buscarello

Personally I prefer a book - for instance nothing like see what other people are reading. I enjoy this especially on the subway....recently I have noticed more people are reading physical books rather then on an e-reader....last week I noticed a person reading:

NEVER SAY NO TO A ROCK STAR - Gotham's Book Club's next selection!

But according to the NY Times Audiobooks are on the rise:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/23/business/media/audiobooks-turn-more-readers-into-listeners-as-e-books-slip.html?_r=1

But this way of reading is not for me!!!

Dana Charlton

What a special epilogue to the book ~ lunching with the author at a Gotham Book Club meeting!
Corey Bearak

I only experience one audio book and sometimes I need to replay chapters. With a printed book, or ebook I can go back to a passage and study it.

oh, and happy anniversary...
Fred Klein

I would like to commend Julie for all she did to make it happen
Fred Klein

This is Joanne Klein: this was the best ever, as the author was present and so articulate.

So......I'm in a book club . 7 men including myself . Once a month we rotate homes . Upscale hors d'oeuvres you know . Stuff like smoked salmon and caviar and the finest California reds and whites chilled to perfection from grapes sometimes grown on the same property . Everybody is either a psychiatrist or a surgeon . Except me . Go figure . As a rich retired airline captain ( I jest ) I happened to choose a place to live in Northern California years ago surrounded by Docs and athletes and musicians . What did I know . I paid $ 23 thousand dollars for my first home in Atherton California in 1973 . My close friend who I lost this year was the Chief of Psychiatry at Stanford University . Hence the book club . I ramble . So we have the chief of surgery at Stanford hospital and some intense shrinks in the club as well as Steve Wosniack co founder of Apple . Can you imagine how intimidating ? Thing is ....Nobody reads the book . We all get drunk and talk about plane crashes and the 49ers. Dogs are allowed . Leashes forbidden . Where was I ? Jesus ! So ....my mother taught me to savor and prize a good read . I've collected books forever . Hard cover , snotty good looking volumes that I swore I would read some day. Well now is that someday ! WOW ! I'm in a Herman Wouk groove right now . The Caine Mutiny , Winds of War and War and Remembrance . I prefer to learn world history in novel form . BUT in a recent digression I read a new biography of Billy Martin the former Yankee fiery player and manager ! Books are the best ! Both Diane and I read voraciously ! But we have the time . Not sure how you working people get through a good book without falling asleep.Oh yeah P.S I'm even starting to write one right Fred ?

Once you're finished we'd love to have you at the Gotham Book Club!

Being with the author added a new dimension to the discussion. Kudos to John and Julie. Also it is always great to be with Gotham's "First Lady".
Rona Gura

I love to read. But, always fiction. For some reason nonfiction doesn't interest me. But, of course, Julie's selections are always great. I call her Gotham's Oprah.
Cynthia Somma

The Wonder Garden and The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a %^&*. Very funny & insightful!
