A Networking Tip?

I need a little help from my Gotham friends. You all “get it” about the importance of networking. That’s why you are part of our Gotham family.

On November 13, I am running a workshop at the Ivy Leadership Summit. ILS is an annual conference of college students that tours the various Ivy League schools. This year, the conference is being hosted at Yale and – you guessed it – my daughter is part of the leadership team. She asked me to run a student workshop about networking to which, of course, I agreed.

So, here is my question for you. If you could give a college student one piece of advice about networking, what would it be?

I am working on my outline and would be appreciative of your input.

As my father said, you can't get ahead laying in bed with the covers over your head!

The old saying "it is not what you know but who you know" has proven to be factual. Using strong communications skills to meet and engage with others and creating long term relationships will help through out your career and life. We at Gotham know that counting on each other for the right resources has be a great benefit and will continue to be.

Like the lottery, you've gotta be in it to win it. Unlike the lottery, you get out of it what you put into it. Be a giver, not a taker, as the Gotham motto says, in essence. You're networking even when you don't realize it, in nearly every context of your life, so conduct yourself accordingly at all times. Oh, and eat your vegetables, because they're good for you -- that's not networking, but just good sense. ;^)

I'm a firm believer in that old axiom: "if you throw enough ... something is going to stick!"
Also it not only pays to meet with those who you may deem to be "power partners" because
you never know where your next referral will come from.

For me, (shy)--it helps for someone to just reach out. It's really that simple...and helps so much.
That's how I felt when I first met you and Fred. :)
