The Basics

My son is taking Drivers’ Ed this summer and very much looking forward to being able to drive. (How that happened in the blink of any eye is the subject for another blog. He was just in nursery school yesterday. I promise.)

In our family, my husband is the driving instructor. He is really good at it, both of my children report.

As for me, I picked my son up from class the other day and he asked to drive home. My response, “Not yet, that’s your father’s job.”

Different than my husband apparently, I have concluded that the muscle memory of driving really interferes with my ability to teach the skill. I know how to drive but I don’t think I could explain the details.

Have you ever taught anyone to drive?

Taught both Jonathan and Marisa. Both my dad and my mom's dad taught me.

I went to driving school to learn, wanted to keep the emotions of family out of it.
I would not be a good driving teacher, I avoid driving whenever possible.

I realized very quickly that I could not be the one taking my children out when they first learned to drive. After they went out with my husband for several lessons and with their driver's ed teacher I was fine---but that first time behind the wheel with my eldest she said I turned white and hit the imaginary break pedal so hard we all decided to let their Dad take over.

I taught both my twins to drive, together. My wife smartly demurred and declined. We all were happier for it that way.

I tried one time with Calli and we had the biggest fight that we ever had. Phil then taught all four kids to drive. I absolutely did not have the patience.
