Last spring my daughter spent a week in Israel to start her international traveling. Last summer she spent a month in India working with an eye care foundation. In the winter she went back to Israel to study.


This summer, she will be spending eight weeks doing research with the Queensland Mental Health Research Center in Brisbane Australia. She doesn’t know a sole.


Next spring, she will be spending the semester abroad most likely in India, South Africa and Brazil pursuing a global health curriculum. And then next summer another global health research project in some corner of the world.


OK, the point of my blog. As a college student, I had been out of the country with my family a few times on vacation. That’s it. The thought of traveling the world would not have occurred to me and frankly, would have frightened me.

Going to Montreal and Quebec with my blended family in my teens probably does not count for much. It was not until 1984 that I took a trip to Mexico with a friend; we lost touch thought mom speaks with his parents. We've done St. Maarten and later Jamaica. In contract Marisa studied in Italy and Jonathan in Greece; Marisa did Birthright to Israel just under the wire this year and did a high school senior trip to Mexico and during college also drove her mom's car on a road trip to Canada; after college she also visited England (as did her mom before we met). Jonathan got to visit Geneva last spring for work.
There is a bucket list of sorts and we'll see.
But there's much to see and experience in these United States and even in and around greater NY.

After high school (in Boston), went off to college in California (UCLA). After college, I packed a suitcase and went off to live in the rest of the world - Europe (France, UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium) then on to Middle East (Israel). Two and a half years later, I came back to the US, but not where I left it - time to explore and discover NY. Since then - Mexico, South America, Canada, Australia, many parts of US. Still to see, Montana, Wyoming, Orient. I prefer living in a place to really experience it, rather than just visiting.

We have been to many places in Europe and just visited Cuba, but I am no longer a good traveler. Too anxiety ridden re being on time, making connections, cancellations, etc. My upcoming Friday blog touches on this.

I was 23, just laid off from working for NY State, and desperate for any job to pay the rent. A friend was pregnant and leaving her job at a travel agency. When I interviewed for the position, I told the boss I just needed the job temporarily and that I couldn't promise to stay if another, better job, in my field became available. He said that was okay, he would train me. 3 months later, they sent me on a travel agent familiarization trip to Rome on TWA. I remember going to the Trevi Fountain; everyone said toss a coin in so you'll come back. I thought I am so lucky to have come here just this once, I could never hope to come back, so no coin toss. I thought to myself, forget doing my Master's in Psychology, I am going to stay in the travel industry. 35+ years later, I am still here, travelling and doing what I love.

Been to England and Monaco - many years ago. Only places outside of the US. Rest inside the US - Boston, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Denver, Montreal (ok that's outside of the US), various parts of Florida. I applaud the folks young and older who are brave enough to travel all over the world! I am not one of them. Plan to keep my future trips in the USA. Plenty left for me to visit right here!

This is so timely. I just saw a film at a festival about an organization that promotes everyone getting their passport. The film follows these 5 young inner city Chicago men to Germany. The story is too long to go into here, but just having a passport creates opportunities that you may not have seen before.

I went to Europe the day after I graduated from college and travelled myself. Best thing I ever did and still recall that trip. Its not the things that you acquire in life but the experiences that make you rich.

I traveled extensively (115 days/year) nationally and internationally while I had my marine electronics business. When I retired from that, I didn't want to leave Long Island for years!

Internationally, I have traveled to Israel twice, first for my niece's wedding, and then for my grand-niece's Bat Mitzvah. I've also traveled to Prince Edward Island, Canada, by car, to visit friends. So I've replied to your blog question, but the real reason for my response is to say how Jaclyn has always impressed me, whether chatting briefly here at the office, or reading your blog. She is quite a special young woman! Thanks for sharing.
