Being Old Fashioned

Categories
Lifestyle

One of the advantages of being old is being old fashioned.

I was tempted to stop here and just let the reader fill in the blanks, but I could not stop without remarking on the tremendous benefit of paper in this digital age.

Paper?  Yes.

For example, my paper pocket calendar saves me oodles of time each day while young techies struggle with their devices to find appointment dates.

Another, is the written Thank You note which is so much more classy than an email thank you or none at all.

You know I'm right. Think about it.

I do not consider myself old; but agree with the written Thank You note. Handwritten notes, not the automated ones, are rarely sent these days. It may take me a bit longer to get to them; but I find they are always appreciated.

We are at a stage where we have the best of both worlds: We get to choose whether we want paper or digital, for each particular purpose. There are many things we can do electronically that simply aren't feasible on paper; and there are many things that we choose to do on paper, even though a reasonable facsimile (no pun intended) could be accomplished digitally, because the impact and import are far greater on paper. When we get really old, we just have to remember not to confuse the two (e.g., don't write on or sneeze into your iPhone, and don't try to click on your paper...).

I am still amazed that you diary (handwritten) every day. Out of curiousity, what else do you still do that some might consider old-fashioned? When I say dungarees in my house, my kids shake their heads--Old habits die hard :)

This past December was the first year we got more e holiday cards than mailed cards. Not nearly as personal. We may join that trend this year.

I am digital when it comes to my calendar and address book. Everything goes in my iPhone or iPad. I am with Liz on this. When it comes to thank you's for gifts, guest at someone's home, and the like, I send out a hand written thank you note right away. I don't consider it "old fashioned" but rather appropriate etiquette.

Digital on contacts and calendar work for me. It empowers me to make appointments I need to on the spot. There still remains contact in an old file that I need to add to my Contacts file. I try to be digital when I can. I know my son has been able to get around often just relying on his iPhone even back in its early days. On many days I find an ability to rely on my iPhone and no need to bring my MacBook. I like and enjoy such convenience.
