Childhood Treats

I was in a bakery last week when a sign on the display caught my eye. The sign read  “Swiss Rolls.” Looking at that sign immediately brought me back to my parents’ house and into their kitchen.

Swiss Rolls were one of my favorite childhood treats. Although my mom never bought them from a baker; our Swiss Roles came in a Drakes Cake wrapper. They were, essentially, Yodels on steroids. It was a large chocolate cake roll filled with vanilla cream and covered in chocolate icing. It was always a special day when my Mom brought home Swiss Rolls.

What was your favorite childhood treat?

There was a bakery in Brooklyn called Schlukers (I am sure I misspelled that). My grandfather used to take us there for Charlotte Russe -- I think the cardboard container was the most fun. Fred, I always thought they were a product exclusively from this bakery. No? And Rona, this was my kind of blog!

Donna Levine wrote Star Cookies was from a bakery in Great Neck really just a huge sugar cookie. My dad used to buy them from me to bribe me to go to Sunday school. I had a piece of a bitter last night also brought back memories

Nancy, my Mom would bring home one Charlotte Russe from the Five Star bakery in Oceanside for my sister once a week. My brother and I weren't allowed to eat them because we were heavy and my sister was skinny.

My cousin Jack and I would walk 1/2 mile to Marion's bake shop in the Waldbaums shopping center on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn every time he came over to get some Rainbow Cookies.

Cinnamon Sticks (like a long version of cinnamon bun). The intoxicating scent of a warm one is complete bliss. To this day, when I drive into Brooklyn and pass a Jewish Bakery, I will look out for this now rare treat. Most bakery's that still make them only seem to a certain time of the month or year.
